Travelling Through History: Bookmobile Services at RPL

In 1947 when the Rowan Public Library acquired a bookmobile, schedules were worked out to share this service so that books from the Negro branch could be carried to all areas of the county.

The 1948 bookmobile was a green 1/2 ton 1947 Chevrolet panel truck outfitted to hold 500 books. In the 1940s when the bookmobile started the average number of stops per day was 1114. The first book actually borrowed was on May 11, 1948. The bookmobile was highly valued and used extensivelythe circulation rose from 48 books in May of 1948 to 422 books in July of 1951.
