Reflection Paper

As I listened to the seminar, the things I wanted to know about the media became
clearer. One of the speakers talked about media literacy in modern times, and that was
Ms. Mona Gatchalian. Ms. Mona discussed the role of the media in our society. When
he discussed this, I discovered that the media is more than just that. There are many
forms of media that can benefit our community. Media such as TikTok, YouTube, and
social media are used for entertainment, but not just only for entertainment. I discovered
that we can use the media to spread awareness. The government uses newspapers
and rappler to communicate with and inform citizens. As a responsible citizen of the
Philippines, she stated that "we have to be aware of what's happening in our current life
right now," and as a student, I agree. Because as citizens of our country, we must be
aware of what is going on in our society. Ms. Mona also discussed self-branding. She
said that it is significant because "this is how we express ourselves." There are many
popular media platforms among people today, including YouTube, Instagram, Twitter,
Tiktok, and Facebook. Self-branding is derived from the word "self," which means "how
people perceive you as a person and how you are presented on that platform." Ms.
Mona said that we need to be "cautious about how we post." I agree with that. Because
as millennials, we must know our boundaries and limitations when posting on these
media platforms for safety. Because on our media platforms, we know that some people
will judge us and it can affect our self-branding. She also discussed the marketing
communication and stages of consumers behavior some students ask Ms. Mona about
how they will promote their business using this media platform,  and she advises them
to use the Facebook marketplace, Shopee, and Lazada to promote their brands. The
next speaker is Dr. Orient Repollo. Dr. Repollo talks about the communication values of
information. Dr. Pollo discussed information literacy. He said that "information literacy is
a social responsibility", and yes, I believe it is true because we all need to be
responsible and careful when we give some information to other people. It should
always be true and accurate information because people will relay the information we
give them. There are numerous avenues and locations to obtain information. Different
social media platforms and news outlets, such as newspapers, obtain information in
various ways. Dr. Pollo discusses the reading comprehension of Filipinos today. Many
people have poor reading comprehension. As a result, there is fake news. People easily
believe what they see and read on these media platforms; they simply relay on it and
spread it, much like the philosophy of Juan dela Cruz "wala kang pake sa opinyon ko
kase opinyon ko alam ko ang nangyayare sa pilipinas Twitter and Facebook kalat na
kalat " Juan Dela Cruz stated that this is his opinion, but he also stated that he knows
the truth even if he only reads it on media flatforms.According to Dr. Pollo, information
literacy is critical. Because we are currently living in a post-truth era, this entails the
"disappearance of shared objective standards for truth" as well as "circuitous slippage
between facts or alternative facts, knowledge, opinion, belief, and truth."I learned that
we in this society need to be critical thinkers. Instead of being like Juan delcruz , we
should do some fact-checking and research on the news that is spread on social media
platforms before believing it. This will allow us to know the truth rather than fake news. I
am glad because I am one of the lucky students who heard important information about
media literacy in modern times and communication values formation. I've met two
experts who specialize in the media. As a student, it helped me greatly. It increased my
knowledge and I am confident that I will put this knowledge to use in the future.
