Networking hardware – Card sort

Print and cut out the images from the first table for learners to use for the ‘Card sort’ activity.
Learners will also use these images for the ‘Paper network’ activity, so you may wish to punch a hole
through the corners of the images to help with that activity.

Print out the second table for each learner (or group of learners).

Wireless access point (WAP)


Connects to a wired network and provides wireless network
radio signal for wireless devices to
connect to

Switch
Enables multiple wired devices to connect, and uses packet
switching to direct data to the correct device

Router
Responsible for moving data from one network to another,
e.g. from your home network to the internet

Modem
Converts data from analogue to digital signals so that it can
be transmitted across different media — traditionally,
telephone cables

Wireless network interface card


Performs a similar function to the network interface card but
uses radio signals to connect to the network
