1. Structure
1.1. The use of relative clause
- Relative clause is used to connect two clauses in one sentence.
- Relative clause is usually used to modify the meaning of a noun before it.
Example: The girl who I met yesterday is beautiful.
(noun)

1.2. Relative clause with “which” and “who”

Both “which” and “who” can function as a subject or an object in a relative clause.

Subject Children who play competitive sports tend to be

Object The boy who the president wants to meet is my

Subject The book which is displayed in the exhibition is

  Note: Special use of “which”:
- “which” can be used to modify the meaning of a whole clause:
- Example:

+ The government is introducing new laws to protect the environment, which is a great movement.

+ People are disposing too much trash into the environment, which makes the global pollution become
worse.

2. How to create relative clause

Sentence 1: People play sports regularly.
Sentence 2: People have a strong immune system.

Step 1: Find the noun used in both sentences People

Step 2: Decide which clause is relative

Step 3: Place the relative clause after the
noun in the main clause
Step 4: Replace the noun in relative clause
with a relative pronoun

 3. Types of relative clause

Lexical Resource Highlight – EDUCATION

Sau khi tốt nghiệp (graduate) từ trường trung học phổ thông, phần lớn các bạn học sinh sẽ học ở một trường
đại học nơi mà họ sẽ chọn một chuyên ngành (major). Trong mỗi chuyên ngành này, học sinh sẽ phải học một
loạt các một học bắt buộc (compulsory subject) mà sẽ cung cấp họ họ rất nhiều kiến thức đặc thù (specific
knowledge). Ngoài ra, học sinh còn có một sự lựa chọn khác đó là học nghề (vocational training) để kiếm kinh
nghiệm thực tiễn (real-life experience) cho công việc mà họ đã chọn. Không may thay, học tại gia (home-
schooling) không phải là một trong số các sự lựa chọn mà được chấp nhận một cách chính thức cho việc giáo
dục sau phổ thông trung học.

Người dân ở nhiều nơi vẫn săn thú quý hiếm một cách bất hợp pháp (illegally hunt), điều này đang khiến
cho nhiều loài động vật dần trở nên tuyệt chủng. Do đó, chính phủ cần thực thi các chính sách (implement
policy) mà cấm việc săn trộm để bảo tồn nhiều loài động vật. Thêm vào đó, chính quyền địa phương (local
authority) cũng cần dừng việc chặt cây bừa bãi, điều này có thể làm giảm nạn phá rừng (deforestation) và
