Find My Region
Learning Competency: Compare the relative
wavelengths of different forms of electromagnetic
waves. (S10FE-IIa-b-47)
Behavioral Learning Objectives:
Solve problem related to wave speed, frequency, and
wavelength.

What I Need to Do

All electromagnetic waves can travel through a medium, but unlike other types of waves, it can
also travel in a vacuum. They travel in a vacuum at a speed of 3x10 8 m/s and denoted as c, the speed of
light. The wave speed, frequency, and wavelength are related by the following equation:
v = λf
Where v is the speed of light, or c expressed in meter pr second (m/s), the frequency f is
expressed in Hertz (hz), and wavelength λ is expressed in meters.

Gearing Up

Since all the EM waves have the same speed and that is equal to the speed of light, as wavelength
decreases, the frequency of the wave increases. First, let’s practice how to solve problems related to
speed, frequency, and wavelength.

1. What is the frequency of radio waves with wavelength of 20 m?

Given: v = 3 x 108 m/s Solution: v = λf or f = v/λ
λ = 20 m 3 x 108 m/s
f=
f=? 20m
f= 1.5 x 107 hz

2. What is the wavelength of light waves with a frequency of 6 X 10 14 hz?

Given: v = 3 x 108 m/s Solution: v = λf or λ = v/f
f = 6 X 1014 hz 3 x 108 m/s
v=
λ=? 6 X 1014 hz
v= 5 X 10-7 m

Getting Better
Now, your turn to solve the problems
1. What is the frequency of gamma ray if its wavelength is 1.5 x 10 -13 m?
Given: v= Solution: v = λf or f = v/λ
λ=
f=
f=
f=

2. What is the wavelength of ultraviolet waves with a frequency of 5 X 10 16 hz?

Given: v= Solution: v = λf or λ = v/f
f=
v=
λ=
v=

Gaining Mastery

Using the image below, identify what region of the EM spectrum do the problem is referring.

1. The EM wave has a wavelength of 5.4 x 10-7 m. What region of the EM spectrum do this wave
belong? Show your solution below.
Write your answer: ___________________________________

What I Need to Remember

 The relationship between speed, frequency, and wavelength is that, as the frequency increases,
the wavelength increases at constant speed.
 The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength. The lower the frequency, the longer the
wavelength.
