Learning Competency: Compare the relative
wavelengths of different forms of electromagnetic
waves. (S10FE-IIa-b-47)
Behavioral Learning Objectives:
Solve problem related to wave speed, frequency, and
wavelength.
What I Need to Do
All electromagnetic waves can travel through a medium, but unlike other types of waves, it can
also travel in a vacuum. They travel in a vacuum at a speed of 3x10 8 m/s and denoted as c, the speed of
light. The wave speed, frequency, and wavelength are related by the following equation:
v = λf
Where v is the speed of light, or c expressed in meter pr second (m/s), the frequency f is
expressed in Hertz (hz), and wavelength λ is expressed in meters.
Gearing Up
Since all the EM waves have the same speed and that is equal to the speed of light, as wavelength
decreases, the frequency of the wave increases. First, let’s practice how to solve problems related to
speed, frequency, and wavelength.
Getting Better
Now, your turn to solve the problems
1. What is the frequency of gamma ray if its wavelength is 1.5 x 10 -13 m?
Given: v= Solution: v = λf or f = v/λ
λ=
f=
f=
f=
