THE MOST FORMAL EVENT, THE ATTIRE IS VERY DRESSY FOR WOMEN AND
USUALLY BLACK TIE FOR MEN
THE HOST – he/she must know the guest to be invited, prepare a guest list, prepare and
distribute invitations a week before the party and plan/prepare the food and drinks to be serve

THE GUESTS – it is customary for the guest to greet the host upon arrival. They are required to
circulate and greet as many guests as practicable.

RECEPTIONS – reception are indicated on the invitation and often span a two-hour interval
frequently, from 1800-2000h, afternoon receptions may be in the mid-afternoon or early evening.
Formal reception usually starts at 2100h and a very formal reception and dance at 2200h or
2300h.

OFFICIAL CALLS – time – honored customs whereby newly assigned officers render official
call on their commanding officer
COURTESY CALL – calls made by the coast guard personnel for some specific reason. Here
are some guidelines related to personal office calls.
NEW YEARS CALL ON COMMANDANT – it has been an invariable custom that officers
make a formal call upon the commandant during New Year’s Day.
ARRIVAL CALL - paid by a subordinate to an immediate superior and then on that officer’s
superior;
DEPARTURE CALL – the official procedures for leaving an installation or post may vary.
CALLS MADE AND PAID – is a widespread custom enabling the senior officer (and spouse)
to entertaining one or a series of receptions at his residence. Calls usually start at 5:00 to 7:00PM
SOCIAL CALLS – calls should last no less than 10 minutes and no more than 15 unless.

0800H – termed as morning colors, national ensign and the union jack are hoisted
UNION JACK – hoisted at the bow at the jack staff
DURING SUNSET – the national ensign and union jack are lowered
HALF MASTING – is a tribute to the dead. Normally it is announced by the higher
headquarters.
DIPPING – navy ships returned the salute when she is 90 degrees from the merchant ship by
lowering the ensign to half mast for a few second and then close up.
QUARTERDECK – it is an area designated by the Commanding Officer for official and
ceremonial functions.
MESSHALL – it is the non-officer dining hall treated same courtesy as the wardroom.
