EXPERIMENT NO. 8
SHORT CIRCUIT ANALYSIS
AIM
To conduct short circuit analysis for a given power system on PSCAD and design
a circuit breaker at the terminals of the generator
COMPONENTS REQUIRED
PSCAD
MATLAB/Simulink is used here as I was not able to install PSCAD on my
laptop.
THEORY
When a fault occurs at generator bus, the first peak in the fault current would be
higher than the subsequent peaks. This is due to the presence of a DC component
due to the time constant of the line determined by the X/R ratio.

The DC component of the current is given by:

where Ip,symm is the symmetrical breaking capacity

The Asymmetric breaking capacity is given by:
The Asymmetric breaking capacity is given by:

Breaking capacity is expressed in MVA by taking into account the rated breaking
current and rated service voltage.

The capacity of a breaker to make current depends upon its ability to withstand
and close successfully against the effects of electromagnetic forces. It is given
by:

OBSERVATIONS AND RESULT

It was not able to perform simulation. Some error in the circuit caused the load
flow analysis to result in invalid values.
