Womanism can be located in a cultural frame which was most clearly articulated by

activist and writer Alice Walker in the 1980s. Her point was that Black women can
be considered “womanish.” Womanish, the root of Womanism, captures the cultural
expression of Black women’s lives. Black girls are described as Womanish if they act
grown, as adult women, and Walker sees this as the cultural seedling of Womanism
(Walker 1983). Of course Walker is not the only articulator of Womanism and more
will be said about the other progenitors of the idea.
