LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Properties of Solutions

Background Information for Learners

A solution has two components; the solute and the solvent. A component present in
small amounts is called solute and the component present in greater amount is called
solvent. The solute is the substance that is being dissolved, while the solvent is the
dissolving medium. Solute and solvents may be solid, liquids, or gases.
Learning Competency with Code
Investigate properties of unsaturated or saturated solutions (S7MT-1c-2).

Activity 1: SOLUTE OR SOLVENT?

Directions: Identify the solute and the solvent in the given solutions below.
SOLUTION SOLUTE SOLVENT
1. Salt water

2. Coffee

3. Orange juice

4. Soft drinks

5. Muddy water

Activity 2: SATURATED AND UNSATURATED SOLUTIONS

Directions: We use solutions every day. People who wear contact lenses use “lens solution” to rinse their contacts and
keep them wet. Athletes who consume sports drinks after exercising benefit from the electrolytes in those solutions. This
activity will explore whether or not there is a limit to how much of one substance can dissolve in another. Write your
answer on the table.

UNSATURATED SOLUTIONS
A. All beakers contain 10.0 g of water. Beaker A Beaker B
B. All beakers are kept at 20 °C.
C. All solutions are stirred for 2 hours.
D. Solute is the same substance in all beakers.

SATURATED SOLUTIONS
A. All beakers contain 10.0 g of water. Beaker C Beaker D
B. All beakers are kept at 20 °C.
C. All solutions are stirred for 2 hours.
D. Solute is the same substance in all beakers.

Activity 3: PICTURE PERFECT!
Directions: Examine picture A and picture B. Answer briefly the guide questions.

A. B.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Which picture is a saturated solution? How do you describe a saturated solution?

2. Which picture is unsaturated solution? How do you describe unsaturated solution?

3. How can you change a saturated solution to unsaturated solution?

Activity 4: GUESSING GAME!

Directions: Consider the beakers below. Answer the questions in the table.

Beaker A Beaker B Beaker C Beaker D

Which beakers represent SATURATED SOLUTIONS?

Which beakers represent UNSATURATED SOLUTIONS?

Reflection:
Write down what you have learned about saturated and unsaturated solution.
