ACTIVITY #1
1. The illustration below is the steering system components, discuss how it works?

Kingpin
Holds the hub assembly in place by maintaining it to its position and to make the
steering possible into side to side directions.
Steering Knuckle Arm
Mainly holds the hub assembly, connects the wheel hub (or spindle) to the
suspension, serve as a mounting place for disc brake caliper, supports the
steering operation and receives the pull and push action linked coming from the tie
rods.
Tie Rods
Helps the vehicle in terms of steering operation. It converts the force it receives
from the steering center link to the steering knuckle arm. Help the steering to
manage smoothly and makes the alignment of the vehicle’s wheel evenly.
Pitman Arm
It transmits and links the motion it receives from the steering gear box into the
drag (or center) link to make the wheels move left or right to turn into side to side
appropriate direction.
Steering Gear
This converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion
that turns the wheels and guides the steering operation. The system involves a
circular gear (the steering pinion) which locks teeth on a bar (the rack).
Steering Wheel
It helps the main control in the direction of the vehicle itself, through the means of
steering the wheel, the linkages transmit the force and make turns and holds the
firm of the vehicle.
2. Explain this statement of trouble of steering system.
a. Car pulls to One Side under Normal Driving
Even the vehicle runs in a straight road but then wheels keep on going to the
other side without pressing the brake and to make sure that your theoretical
thinking is right, release the steering wheel, observe and watch it carefully with
precaution, it will turn little by little on its own. An example is a vehicle having
uneven or misaligned front wheels and many more causes it.
b. Car wanders from Straight Ahead Driving
It is a situation where the vehicle wiggles and turn side to side unwantedly. That
maybe because of misaligned tie rods and uneven wheel alignment and many
more can cause it. So, it is efficient on having a tire alignment or proper replacing
of parts to maintain the stabilization of the vehicle.

3. In servicing steering system why do we need to check the tire pressure and
conditions of the tires. Explain.
It is require to have checked the tire pressure and conditions of each tires evenly
because, it can be the cause of having a worn out and defect parts that can be
the beginning of having unaligned wheels, also ripping the stabilization and
comfort of the vehicle itself and somehow can cause an accident. Always
remember that the tires are one of the most important parts of the vehicle, and
when a vehicle is having a good tire condition it gives us comfortability and peace
of mind that we are in a good and safe ride.

4. Discuss briefly how to adjust steering gear.

Use a right size wrench to hold the outer bolt of the steering gear adjuster and
counter the center bolt or stud by using a correct hand tools using maybe an
Allen wrench or any special tool depending on the vehicle’s specification. Turing
clockwise will tighten the steering adjuster and make sure to tighten it without
using so much force that can cause of worn out.
