2) Introduction to the PG Programmes

The PG programmes in Civil Engineering are conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The PG
programmes offered consist of Structural Engineering, Environmental and Water Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Highway and
Traffic Engineering and, Sustainable Built Environment. Salient feature of the PG programme is that all these five programmes are offered
annually from 2014. Annually, over 100 students register for all the five PG programmes offered by the department. The courses in each
programme consist of course units conducted through lectures, tutorials, assignments, laboratory classes, field work, and design or research
projects. The Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya has excellent testing facilities for laboratory and fieldwork related to
all the five PG programmes and the courses are taught by a team of highly qualified academic staff. In addition, visiting experts from the
industry and from foreign and local universities are also conducting some courses in different programmes to share their valuable experiences
with the PG students. State of art computer software is available for analytical and design work for each programme. Details of different
programmes, syllabi of each programme, admission requirements, degree awarding criteria and the progress of the PG programme etc., are
detailed in the following sections of this handbook.

4) Vision and Mission Statement of the Department

Mission

To acquire, promote, develop and disseminate knowledge and application of civil engineering in particular to produce engineers with skills and
attitudes who attain competence as professional engineers providing leadership in the national and international arena and to interact with local
industry and community for sustainable development leading to enhanced quality of life while preserving national heritage.

Vision

The mission of the department is to become the best Civil Engineering department in South Asia as the centre of excellence in teaching, research &
development and consultancy.

5) Admission Requirements

5.1 Programme of Study Leading to the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)


a) A Bachelor’s Degree acceptable to the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee or
b) Such other qualification as may be approved by the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee as suitable for candidature for PGDip, in a field related
to the programme of study.

5.2 Programme of Study Leading to Degree of Master of the Science of Engineering (MScEng)
a) A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with First or Second Class Honours or
b) A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with acceptable postgraduate qualifications, or
c) A degree or such other qualification as may be approved by the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee as suitable for candidature for the
MScEng Degree with a minimum of one year’s experience, after obtaining the Degree or such qualification, in a field related to the
programme of study.

5.3 Programme of Study Leading to Degree of Master of Science (MSc)


a) A Bachelor’s Degree with First or Second Class Honours or

(a) Introduction

The postgraduate programme in Environmental and Water Engineering is conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of
Peradeniya. The well equipped laboratories and highly qualified teaching staff attached to the Environmental and Water Engineering laboratories

(a) Introduction

The postgraduate programme in Geotechnical Engineering is conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya has excellent testing facilities for laboratory and fieldwork related to Geotechnical
Engineering. The course will be taught by a team of highly qualified academic staff. State of the art computer software is available for analytical and
design work. The course consists of course units conducted through lectures, tutorials, assignments, laboratory classes and research or design
projects.

(a) Introduction
The postgraduate programme in Highway and Traffic Engineering is conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya.
The well-equipped laboratories and well-qualified teaching staff attached to the Highway and Transportation laboratories provide an excellent
learning environment to the students. Besides, once the proposed transport simulation and GIS laboratory is set up towards the end of this year, it will
give cutting edge opportunity for students to use those facilities for research work.

6.4) Postgraduate Programme in Structural Engineering

(a) Introduction

The postgraduate programme in structural engineering has been conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya over
the last 20 years. The programme has been designed to delivercomprehensive knowledge for practicing engineers and postgraduate research students.
The course consists of compulsory (core) courses conducted through lectures, tutorials, assignments, laboratory and design classes and a research
study. The elective courses can be selected as per the eligibility requirement.

6.5) Postgraduate Programme in Sustainable Built Environment
(a) Introduction

This program focuses on introducing the concepts and methods of reducing the environmental burden of activities related to the built environment.
The students of this programme will have an opportunity to expose themselves to the concept of “Green Building Techniques” applicable in many
disciplines of engineering. The main objective of this programme is the capacity building in the area of sustainable built environment. Further, the
graduates will be capable of practicing the concepts of green building techniques in their respective areas of specializations. In addition, they will be
eligible to apply to become a Green Building Certified Professional (GBCP) who is authorized by the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL)
to assess buildings for the award of"Green Building Rating" in Sri Lanka.This postgraduate programme is conducted by the Department of Civil
Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The course consists of taught courses, industrial assignments, laboratory and design exercises and a research
project. The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, has excellent physical facilities and a team of highly qualified academic staff to
conduct the programme. Further, visiting national and international experts from industry and academia will contribute as resource personnel.

8) Degree Awarding Criteria

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)

Students registered for Postgraduate Diploma are required to obtain a total of 12 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.75 in taught course units and a
research study which will be evaluatedthrough a written report and a viva-voce examination. A period of twelve months from the beginning of the
postgraduate course is sufficient for the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma.

Degree of Master of the Science (MSc)/Degree of Master of the Science of Engineering (MScEng)

Those who obtain good grades for the taught course units and demonstrate satisfactory progress in research project may continue the course leading
to MSc/MScEng degree. In addition to the requirements at the first three semesters, the student is required to submit a dissertation on a project study
with a substantial research component. They will also be required to give a seminar and face a viva-voce examination at the completion of the
dissertation in the MSc/MScEng programme. The candidates are also strongly encouraged to either present the research material at a national
conference or submit a paper of such standard that is acceptable to be published in a refereed journal. A period of eighteen months from the
beginning of the postgraduate diploma course is sufficient for successful completion of the degree. Earning a total of 24 credits (min. GPA 3.0) and
successful completion of a project with substantial research component, equivalent to 4 months full time study or 6 months part time study will be
required for the award of the MSc/MScEng degree.
