T Transport System: Science & Technology IX
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the activity, students are expected to:
a. discuss the functions of the circulatory system.
b. identify and distinguish the parts of the circulatory system.
c. discuss the flow of blood from the heart to the body and to the lungs and vice versa.
d. make a research on the different diseases associated with the circulatory system and its
effects.
OVERVIEW
The need for a Transport System
Imagine what will happen if you consume food but never get rid of waste? What if you and your neighbours
take out the garbage but the collectors never come to pick it up. Your neighborhood will be like a garbage dump with
an overwhelming stench and unsanitary air. Can you imagine also if you and your neighbors are disabled that in times
of calamities none of you could go to the store for food or contact anyone to bring you food?
Imagine your body as a community and that each cell in your body is a neighbourhood. If food (nutrients)
cannot be delivered to each home in the neighborhood, the “the neighbours” (the cells) would eventually die. Or, if
nutrients were available but no waste disposal service exists, conditions in each “home” and eventually the entire
“neighbourhood” would become unsanitary and unhealthy. That is why every cell must get nutrients and dispose of
waste through the circulatory system.
Nutrients and oxygen should be delivered to every cell in the body. Therefore, oxygen and food materials
need to be distributed to the cells, and wastes need to be removed with sufficient speed. In this case, a transport
system carries substances from one part of the body to another. This process of transport in animals is carried out by
the circulatory system.

The function of the circulatory system is to transport ____________ and ____________ to cells and carry
____________ away from cells to the organs responsible for eliminating them from the body. Its main organ is the
heart. The heart is a muscular pump. When the heart ____________, it produces pressure on the blood in the
circulatory system. This pressure pushes blood through the body. The body travels away from the heart in vessels
called ____________. It returns to the heart through vessels called ____________. To stop blood from flowing
backwards, flexible flaps of tissue called ____________ are found throughout the circulatory system in the heart and
veins. Arteries and veins are connected by tiny, thin-walled vessels called ____________. These very small vessels
are in close contact with the organs and tissues of the body. The ____________ of nutrients, wastes, oxygen and
carbon dioxide occur between tissues and the blood through the walls of these small vessels.
