SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS

INTERNATIONAL SYLLABUS TEST (2)
System of linear equations

1.Travis and his band are planning to record their first CD. The
initial start-up cost is $1500, and each CD will cost $4 to
produce. They plan to sell their CDs for $10 each. How many
CDs must the band sell before they make a profit?

2.Solve each system of equations by graphing.

(a) y=2x +9 (b) 3x +2y = 10 (c) 4x – 2y = 22
y= - x + 3 2x + 3y = 10 6x + 9y = - 3

3.Use the graphic at the bottom.

(a)Write equations that represent the cost of developing a roll

of film at each lab.
(b)Under what conditions is the cost to develop a roll of film
the same for either store?

4.The sides of an angle are parts of two lines whose equations

are 2y + 3x = - 7 and 3y – 2x = 9. The angle’s vertex is the point
where the two sides meet. Find the coordinates of the vertex
of the angle.

5.Solve each system of equations by using either substitution

or elimination.
(a) r + 4s = -8 (b) 10m – 9n = 15 (c) 3c – 7d = - 3
3r +2s = 6 5m – 4n = 10 2c + 6d = -34

6.Three times one number added to five times another

number is 54. The second number is two less than the first.
Find the numbers.

7.All 28 members in Crestview High School’s Ski Club went on

a one-day ski trip. Members can rent skis for $16.00 per day or
snowboards for $19.00 per day. The club paid a total of $478
for rental equipment.
(a) Write a system of equations that represents the number of
members who rented the two types of equipment.
(b) How many members rented skis and how many rented
snowboards?

8.Campus rental rents 2- and 3- bedroom apartments for $700

and $900 per month, respectively. Last month they had six

vacant apartments and reported $4600 in lost rent. How many

of each type of apartment were vacant?

9.Mr. Arthur is writing a test for his math classes. The test will
have true/false questions worth 2 points each and multiple-
choice questions worth 4 points each for a total of 100 points.
He wants to have twice as many multiple-choice questions as
true/false.
(a) Write a system of equations.
(b)How many true/false questions and multiple-choice
questions will be on the test?
(c)If most of his students can answer true/false questions
within 1 minute and multiple-choice questions within 1.5
minutes, will they have enough time to finish the test in 45
minutes?

10.Graph each system of equations and describe it as one

solution, no solution and infinitely many solutions.
(a) y = x + 3 (b) 3x + y = 3 (c) y – x = 5
y = 2x + 6 6x + 2y = 6 2y – 2x = 8
