Electrochemistry AS

1. Oxidation Numbers
(elements) = 0
(compound: H; O; metal, gr1, gr2) = 0
(ion: H; O; metal, gr1, gr2) = charge of ion
2. Redox reaction : change O.N of some elements.
O.N is
reductant increase oxidised Lose e

/
oxidant decrease reduced Gain e

Balance equation:

oxidation Reductant lose e

reduction Oxidant gain e

Total e gain = Total e lose

Total charge left = Total charge right
Number of element of left = number element of right
3. Disproportionation reactions
A disproportionation reaction is a reaction in which the same species is both
oxidised and reduced
Cl2 + H2O → HCl + HClO
Cl2 + NaOH cold → NaCl + NaClO + H2O
Cl2 + NaOH hot → NaCl + NaClO3 + H2O
4. Ionic equation
solute + H2O → ion + (cation) + ion – (anion)
molecules reaction → ionic equation
