Starlink satellite Internet monthly subscription prices go down on 'market conditions'

The price reduction messages (image: Starlink)The price reduction messages (image: Starlink)

SpaceX is lowering the monthly subscription price for its Starlink satellite Internet service citing
'improved market conditions.' The Stalink price cuts sometimes reach 50% for select users.

Many Starlink satellite Internet users are reporting that they got an email from SpaceX informing
them not of a monthly subscription price increase, but rather of a price cut for the first time. The
messages cite various reasons from changes in "local market conditions" and "parity in purchasing
power" among its users, to gratitude for being an early beta tester. For some customers, like the
ones in Chile or Brazil, the reduction is the whopping 50% or more, as the monthly subscription price
there went from a hundred to fifty dollars, or from 500 Brazilian Real, to 230.

Others in Europe and the UK are reporting more modest but still significant price drops, and the
Starlink price decrease pattern seems to follow areas where there is a strong Internet infrastructure
already and it has to compete with local providers that charge less for the same speeds it is
providing.

Nevertheless, the Starlink monthly subscription price decrease is welcome news as SpaceX just
recently was forced to raise them by reshuffling the categories and their top speed tiers around. In
the US, the standard Starlink service price is now US$110 a month after you buy the dish and
decoders for US$599. The Starlink RV option for service in moving vehicles costs US$135, while the
top Starlink Business tier that used to go by the name Starlink Premium is US$500 a month with
US$2,500 initial outlay, but can deliver speeds of up to 350 Mbps.
The most expensive Starlink Maritime option for yachts, cruise ships, and other boats costs the
whopping US$5,000 a month on top of the US$10,000 one-time equipment purchase for two Starlink
terminals. Every little bit helps and, while US Starlink users that report price reductions are few and
far between still, there are a lot of global customers who will be paying much less for their satellite
Internet going forward. Elon Musk is on record saying that if market conditions improve and inflation
abates he may lower the "embarrassing" Tesla car prices, but it is SpaceX that now gives a surprise
start of the price reduction process in his business empire.

Tesla's CEO will be holding a joint event with T-Mobile's Mike Sievert over a Starlink partnership
today where he may mention the monthly subscription price reductions across the globe and what
exactly led to them.
