Activity 4: Problem Solving Involving Stoichiometry

Write all the given data and conditions used, step by step solution, labels to each
answer and necessary explanations. Always box the final answers.
(Use another clean sheet of short bond paper to show the complete solutions and answers,
only the final answers are to be written on the space provided)

1.) A 100 − 𝑔𝑔 ionic compound, whose 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 is 134.0 𝑔𝑔/𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚, has a percent composition of
34.31% 𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁, 17.93% 𝐶𝐶, and 47.76% 𝑂𝑂. (15 pts)

(a) determine the empirical formula and (8.5 pts)

(b) the molecular formula of the said substance. (2.5 pts)

(c) How many particles are there if there is 0.75 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 of this substance? (2 pts)

(d) How much does each element in 0.75 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 of this substance contain? (2 pts each)

2.) A simple mixture of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, 𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑂𝑂3(𝑠𝑠) ) and white vinegar (acetic acid,
𝐶𝐶𝐻𝐻3 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶(𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎) ) creates a cleaning agent called sodium acetate (𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝐻𝐻3 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝑂𝑂 (𝑠𝑠) ). The reaction of the
two substances also includes the formation of carbon dioxide and water. (28 pts)

(a) Write and balance the chemical equation of the reaction. Show in a table that the number of atoms
is balanced on both sides. (Notice that there are same atoms appears twice in a compound.) (3 pts)

(b) What type of chemical reaction is this? (1 pt)

(c) What are the molar masses 𝑀𝑀 of each substance? (10 pts: 2 pts each)

(d) Determine the % composition of each atom in sodium acetate? (4 pts: 1 pt each)

(e) If you use 8.5 𝑔𝑔 of baking soda and 4.5 𝑔𝑔 of vinegar, which will be the limiting reagent? (2 pts)

(f) How much each of the products will be produced out from the limiting reactant? (6 pts: 2 pts each)

(g) What is the percent yield of sodium acetate if the actual yield is just 3.8 𝑔𝑔 because of the limiting
reactant? (2 pts)
