Please answer the following questions in the space provided. Part marks will be awarded for
partial answers. Show all of your work for each calculation.
1. You are a chemical engineer that is responsible for synthesizing a new drug. You
look at a series of potential chemical reactions that will make your drug along with
their respective K values. What type of K value would you be looking for and why?

As a chemical engineer I will be looking for that chemical reaction for which value of
K is large. Because K is a determinant of production. The higher the value of of K the
greater will the production of the drug. Our sole aim will be to maximize the yield of
drug and it can be theoretically predicted from the value of K. That's why I will choose
that reaction for which the value of K is large.

What would you have to do to the reaction in order to increase the magnitude of K?

3. If Q < K, which way will the reaction proceed and why? (1 mark)
Q can be used to determine which direction a reaction will shift to. If K > Q,
a reaction will proceed forward, converting reactants into products. If K < Q,
the reaction will proceed in the reverse direction, converting products into reactants. If
Q = K, then the system is already at equilibrium.
4. Explain why the conjugate base of a strong acid can’t react with water. (2 marks)
A strong acid like HCl donates its proton so readily that there is essentially no
tendency for the conjugate base Cl– to reaccept a proton. ... A strong base like the H–
ion accepts a proton and holds it so firmly that there is no tendency for the conjugate
acid H2 to donate a proton. Hence, H2 is a very weak acid

5. Why are some salts acidic when others are neutral? (2 marks)
