THE BIGGEST DISAGREEMENT
THE FUTURE OF THE FARM IN THE HOOVES OF THE PIGS
The pigs increase their influence on
the farm, deciding things and then
offering their decisions to the
animals, who must approve them by
a majority vote. Snowball and
Napoleon continue their debates,
one of which happens over the
building of a windmill on a knoll.
Snowball argues in favor of the
windmill, which will eventually
become a labor-saving device;
Napoleon argues against it, saying
that building the windmill will take
time and effort away from
producing food.
On the past Sunday when the plan
for the windmill was to be voted on,
Napoleon called out nine ferocious
dogs, who chased Snowball off the
farm. Napoleon then announces that
all debates will stop and institutes a
number of other new rules for the
farm.

- Snowball, could you tell us why you think it is
necessary to build a windmill?
S.B: Yes, of course, the windmill could be made to
operate a dynamo and supply the farm with electrical
power. This would light the stalls and warm them in
winter, and would also run a circular saw, a chaff-
cutter, a mangel-slicer, and an electric milking
machine.
- That is amazing, can you tell us what you base your
studies on?
S.B: The mechanical details came mostly from three
books which had belonged to Mr. Jones "One
Thousand Useful Things to Do About the House",
"Every Man His Own Bricklayer", and "Electricity for
Beginners"
- And where did you work on reading the books and
making up the blueprints?
S.B: I used as my study a shed which had once been
used for incubators and had a smooth wooden floor,
suitable for drawing on. I was closeted there for
hours at a time. With the books held open by a stone,
and with a piece of chalk gripped
between the knuckles of a trotter.
