Read out the text and answer the following questions:

All creatures have a purpose, and our world would be terribly out of balance without insects.

The poet is trying to establish a mood with the repeated sounds and this technique makes poetry
reading fun. Rossetti uses birds and butterflies in this poem to present a positive and beautiful
image of nature.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan
Read out the text and answer the following questions

1. Why is the great reformer known as Sir?


Sir Syed won the British confidence and cordial relationship by saving their lives during the
War of Independence. He had received this award because of his great services for the British.

2. Write about Sir Syed Ahmad Khan's contribution to different fields?

Sir Syed opened a school in Muradabad in 1859 and Ghazipur in 1862 for children. In 1863 he
established a society of Scientific Knowledge in Ghazipur to translate English books in Urdu.

3. Name the book Sir Syed wrote to remove the misunderstandings between Muslims and the
British.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan wrote many books. The most significant of his literary works were his
pamphlets ―Loyal Muhammadans of India‖ and ―Causes of Indian Revolt‖.

4. What were the results of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's Aligarh movement?
Sir Syed brought the Muslim revival through the Aligarh movement and showed the importance
of education. He brought about the Two-nation theory and is known as "The Father of the
Pakistan Movement"

5. What kind of contacts did the family of Sir Syed have with Mughal court?
His family contacts were very strong with Mughal court. The father of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan
was very close to Akbar Shah.

6. Write about the education of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan?


Sir Syed received his education under the old system. He learned to read the Quran at his home.
After this, Maulvi Hamid-ud-Din, was his first private tutor. After completing a course in
Persian and Arabic, he studied mathematics. He later studied some well-known books.
Flood
Read out the text and answer the following questions:

1. What is a flood and what causes floods?


A flood is a natural event or occurrence that is usually dry land, suddenly gets submerged
underwater. Flooding happens during heavy rains, when rivers overflow, when ocean waves.

2. Which areas are most likely to flood?


The natural behavior of water is that it moves from higher ground to lower ground.
Additionally, anywhere that rainfall floods can develop.

3. Discuss some effects of floods on the environment.


The environment suffers when floods happen. Chemicals and other hazardous substances end up
in the water and eventually contaminate the water bodies that floods end up in.

4. Discuss some effects of floods on humans.


Floods can have devastating consequences and can have effects on the people. During floods,
roads, bridges, farms, houses and automobiles are destroyed. People become homeless.

5. How trees can minimize the damage caused by floods?

Trees, shrubs and grass help protect the land from erosion by moving water. People living in
low-lying areas must be encouraged to use a lot of vegetation.

6. What happens when people construct houses in flood-prone areas?


There are buildings springing up in many places where they have not been authorized. Some
of these buildings are placed in waterways. The danger is that, with the rains, water will find
its own level if it cannot find its way. The result is flooding and your home could be
underwater.

Newspaper
Newspapers are delivered to people’s doorsteps to keep them acquainted with the happenings
around the world. We can know about the general condition of the world just by clicking on a
button. On several occasions, we may find it important to know and learn about weather conditions.
Earlier, newspapers used to deliver that to us. Now we can check the news on our devices to learn
about weather conditions prevailing across the world. Newspapers can convey any kind of news.
The nature of the news being delivered can be political, social, economic, or entertainment related.
Newspapers are also read by several stock market analysts and shareowners to assess the quality of
stocks and shares.
Mobile phone
Now day’s people have become addicted to mobiles. Even when we don’t need to mobile we surf
the net, play games making a real addict. As mobile phones became smarter, people became
dumber. Wide usage of mobiles has resulted in less meet and talk more. Now people don’t meet
physically rather chat or comment on social media. It is a major concern now of losing one’s
privacy because of much mobile usage. Today anyone could easily access the information like
where you live, your friends and family, what is your occupation, where is your house, etc; by just
easily browsing through your social media account. A mobile phone could both be positive and
negative; depending on how a user uses it.
Story:
A Wise Old Owl
There was an old owl that lived in an oak. Everyday, he saw incidents happening around him.
Yesterday he saw a boy helping an old man to carry a heavy basket. Today he saw a girl shouting at
her mother. The more he saw the less he spoke. As he spoke less, he heard more. He heard people
talking and telling stories. He heard a woman saying that an elephant jumped over a fence. He also
heard a man saying that he had never made a mistake. The old owl had seen and heard about what
happened to people. Some became better and some became worse. But the old owl had become
wiser each and every day.
Moral : You should be observant, talk less but listen more. This will make you a wise person.
