PRINTERS’ CORRECTION SIGNS
Correction signs are editors/typesetters signs used to mark corrections before a work goes out
for printing.
Printers’ correction signs can also be called Proofreaders’ marks; used when amendments have
to be made on a typewritten or handwritten work in order to produce a meaningful copy.
Correction signs comes in two forms namely:
i) Abstract symbols ii) Abbreviation

Abstract Symbol Meaning

1. Close up the space

2. # Insert space.

3. NP or // New paragraph

4. stet Leave as typed i.e let it


stand.

5. trs Transpose the order of


position.

6. l/c Lower case.

7. u/c or CAPS Upper case i.e. type in


capital letter.

8. u/s Underscore or underline.

9. or run on Continue typing in the


same paragraph.

10. Delete

11. Bold

12. Do not bold

MANUSCRIPT: This is a handwritten and disjointed material which needs to be typed in a


readable and meaningful manner.
Manuscript contains instructions, alterations, transpositions, marginal notes, abbreviations, etc.
TYPESCRIPT: This is the original typewritten form of an author’s book.
