How do I calculate shuttering quantity for beams & columns?

Shuttering is measured in Surface Area and in SI units it is in sq.m [ Square meters ]. The other way it is
Shuttering area and it can be calculated by measuring the area of contact of the shuttering surface with
the concrete surface.

Formwork shall be measured in square metres as the actual surfaces in contact with the concrete

The formwork or shuttering quantity for the member is measured as per the code of BIS - IS 1200:1982,
Part 5- Method of Measurement of Building and Civil Engineering Works.

For Column follow the process

1. Measure the four sides of column at base or in cross-section.

2. Calculate the perimeter of column base.

3. Measure the Colum height.

4. Multiply the perimeter of base and height of column to give the shuttering area of column.

Or other way, add all 4 sides and multiply it by height of column.

For Beam follow the process

1. Take the cross-section of beam and measure the lengths of the two sides and base of beam.

2. Sum the three measurements.

3. Measure the span of the beam

4. Multiply the span length by sum of the three measurements (beam base two vertical sides) gives the
shuttering area of beam.

The top side in cross-section of beam is not considered as it will be part of beam.

Or the other way, add the beam height(2 sides) and beam base and multiply it by beam length.

 Where formwork is required to be lined with wall board, hardboard, polythene sheet No deduction
shall be made for openings up to 0.4sqm.

No deduction shall be made for any opening/cutouts when slip form technique is used.

Raking or circular cutting and rounded or moulded edges shall be measured in running meters.
Moulded stopping shall be enumerated.

Formwork to secondary beam shall be measured up to the sides of main beams, but no
deduction shall be made from the formwork of the main beams where the secondary beam
intersects it.

Formwork to beam shall be measured up to sides of column, but no deduction shall be made
from the formwork to stanchion or column casings at intersections of beam.

shuttering quantity is calculated in sq.meters or sq. feet. it is the area of shuttering material used for form
work.

for column we need shuttering on four sides

so area = sum of 4 sides * height of column

for beam

1. if it is plinth beam or tie beam we will have base prepared and we pour concrete from top. so no
shuttering required on top and bottom shuttering required only on sides

shuttering = 2* length of beam * depth

2.if it is slab beam then we do not have base, skOpen

we need shuttering 3 sides(2 sides and one bottom).

beam and slab are casted monolothically to act as T beam
shuttering =[2* (total depth of beam -depth of slab) + breadth of beam ] * length of beam

For beams quantity of shuttering can be calculated using following formula

= Depth of beam x width of beam x length between columns

For column quantity of shuttering can be calculated using following formula

=length of column x width of column x total height of column

For column Shuttering Add all 4 sides and multiply it by height .

For beam Shuttering Add the beam height(2 sides) and beam base and multiply it by beam length

Example

Column Shuttering caluction for 1′*1′3″ column 10′3″ height = (2*1*1 0′3″)+(2*1′3″*10′3″)

Beam Shuttering for a 1′9″*1′*20′ length beam = (((1′9″-5″)*2)+1′)*20′

(5″ is deducted from the beam height 1′9″ as I've assumed 5″ as the slab thickness )

The area that gets wet while pouring the concrete is the shuttering area. This is as per IS standards of
measurements for civil Engineering.

Yes there is a thumb rule for it. It surely depends on the structural elements to be concreted. For eg: take a
beam of size 200*300 mm and length 5m. Then the total concrete required will be l*b*h i.e .2*.3*5 = 0.3
