COMMON EXPRESSIONS
Different ways to say HELLO
Instead of saying Hello, you can say:
● Good morning: buenos días
● Good afternoon: buenas tardes
● Good evening: buena noches
Curso De Listening y Pronunciación
Aprenderinglesamericano.com

We  use  these  expressions  to  express  good  wishes  for  greetings  at  a  certain
time of a day. They are more formal than “Hello”.

In more informal contexts, you can use the phrases below to say “Hello”:
● Hey, how are you?

0
● Hey, how’s it going?
● Hey, how are you doing?

2
Because  ‘How  are  you?”  is  usually  used  to  start  conversations  as  a  greeting.

0
We  don’t  actually  respond  by  telling  people  how  we  are  feeling  like  ‘Estoy
cansada’ or ‘estoy enojada’.

2
We usually respond with a greeting in return, like
● Hi

A
● Hey

I
● How are you?
● Hi, good morning/afternoon/evening

A
Or you can say:
● I’m good, thanks. How are you?
● I’m fine. Thanks.

*Avoid this mistake:

Some of my students make this mistake of saying “Good night” as a
greeting  at  night  time.  Note  that,  we  only  use  “good  night”  to  wish
someone  a  good  sleep at night, or to say goodbye. If you greet someone late
in the day, remember to say “Good evening” instead of “Good night”.

Look at this example dialogue where people use ‘good night’ to say goodbye
Curso De Listening y Pronunciación
Aprenderinglesamericano.com

A: Good night.
(Una buena noche.)
B: Good night. Have a good evening
(Buenas noches. Ten una buena tarde. )

0
A: Thank you. You too
(Un gracias. Igualmente.)

2

I am / I’m + name.

0
We use this expression to introduce our name to people.
I’m Carmen Rivera.

2
I’m Jenny Lim.

A

TO BE WITH I, WE, YOU

I
Hi. I’m Cody.
Introducing  yourself  is  one  of  the  first  things  that  you’ll  learn  in  any

A
language.  Today,  we’re  going  to  look  at  simple  sentences  made  with
pronouns and the verb to be starting with the three pronouns: I, you and we

Pronouns: I, YOU AND WE

In  English,  the  pronoun  ‘I’ is used to refer to yourself, “you” is used to refer to
the  listener  (it  can  be  one  or  more  than  one  person),  and  “we”  is  used  to
refer to a group of people including yourself.
In  a  sentence  like  I’m  Carmen  Rivera,  the  pronoun  is  the  subject  of  the
sentence (the person that the sentence is about). Similarly,
● ‘We’ is the subject of the sentence ‘We're not in the same class.’
● ‘You’ is the subject of the sentence ‘You’re in room B.’
Curso De Listening y Pronunciación
Aprenderinglesamericano.com

We  call  ‘I’,  ‘you’  and  ‘we’  subject  pronouns.  Pronouns  that  are  used  as
subjects of sentences.

Subject  Example

I (yo)

2 0
0
I am Sophie.
(Yo soy sophia)

2
A
You (tú)

I

You are Bernie.
(Tu eres bernie)

A We (nosotros)

We are in New York.
(Estamos en Nueva York.)

Remember  that  almost  all  sentences  in  English  need  subjects.  The  next
thing that is important in a sentence is the verb. Let’s look at the verb to be.
Curso De Listening y Pronunciación
Aprenderinglesamericano.com

The verb to be WITH I, YOU AND WE

 hat is the verb “be”?

W
In  this  dialogue,  “am”  and  “are”  are all the verb “be”; “to be” in English is the
same as “ser” and “estar” in Spanish;

0
We  usually  use  the  verb  “be”  after  a  pronoun  when  we  talk  about  names,
age, jobs, locations or feelings.

2
We will learn how to talk about all of t

0
Where does “be” go in a sentence?

2
In statements, “am” is used right after “I”, and “are” is used right after “you”
and “we”:

Pronoun  To be

A
I
am Jenny.

I
(yo)

You
are  in Room B.
(tú)

A
We
are  not in the same class.
(nosotros)

Note: unlike in Spanish in which pronouns can be omitted in sentences:

Yo soy un estudiante = Soy un estudiante.

In English, we cannot omit pronouns in sentences:

I am a student, NOT Am a student.

To form Yes/No questions, put “am” in front of “I” (am I…?), and “are” in front
of “you” and “we” (Are you…?, Are we…?).

0
In their full form, “am” and “are” are pronounced as below:

In spoken English, “I’m”, “you’re” and “we’re” are used more often than “I
