WELCOME TO UMNGAZI RIVER BUNGALOWS.

We do hope well soon be welcoming you in person. Weve been nestled in the heart of the Wild Coast for many years now, so we can tell you plenty about all the treasures you and your family will discover here. There are the expected things, of course waterside bungalows that feel like home; our abundant array of freshly prepared food, and more activities than youll find time for.

But then there are the more personal things: sharing coffee and rusks as you watch the morning mist brushing the waters surface. Falling asleep with an old paperback on your chest and salt in your hair. Seeing a Fish Eagle swoop low over the estuary, or hearing the cattle call from a distant hillside. Taking a shower open to the atmosphere of the Wild Coast. Most importantly, there are those timeless moments with family that allow you to reconnect, refresh and later, remember. Talking about these things might make you want to visit. To experience them yourself will make you want to stay.

EACH OF OUR THATCHED BUNGALOWS is tucked
away amongst indigenous flora, on a green hillside providing more view than most eyes can take in. Dont be surprised if you find yourself perching on the doorstep for hours, simply watching the waves beyond, while birds forage and bicker in the bushes around you. Our homely cottages will make you kick your shoes off, undo your top button and put your watch aside. And for slightly breathless honeymooners, there are our tranquil, private bungalows perfectly positioned to help you forget all about wedding speeches and guest lists.

Of course, you may want to be out much of every day. You could spend the whole time dozing by our riverside pool, or hanging out at Basils Bar, where darts, snooker and tall stories will make you feel like a regular in no time. In our lofted hillside spa were lucky enough to have dedicated, professional therapists, if you want your city stress to be massaged away to the soundtrack of nothing but breakers and bird calls. Or you might find relaxation in other ways; in the gym, on the courts or on a long amble down our pristine beach; as rich in shore life as most coastlines used to be. For parents in need of a break, our dedicated caregivers are always on hand, so leave the little ones with us and feel free to relive your early days of romance.

SO BRING A HEALTHY APPETITE. All meals are included with your booking. Whats more, were not shy with our portions bigger is better. Kick off the day with an unhurried River Breakfast as you loosely plan out another day filled with the sights and sounds of the hospitable Wild Coast. Later, sample our menu, which offers up versatile meat dishes, fish so fresh it melts in your mouth and crackingly good salads and veggies. Oh, and feel free to make requests. Like everything else, our menus flexible and our chefs are always happy to try and meet your needs.

If youre celebrating something special (what is it about the Wild Coast that makes so many people decide to pop the question?), you can always book out our riverside gazebo for a private get-together. Its perched on stilts above the clear, calm waters of our river. Or try something more uptown, by requesting a private evening in the Green Door Wine Cellar, where only you, your party and a personal waiter will disturb the peaceful atmosphere as you tell tall tales over a selection of the finest wines from our platinum awardwinning wine list. At Umngazi, relaxed dining experiences will form the heart of your very special coastal getaway. If you find yourself settling into your chair and losing all track of the time, then well know our chefs are doing their job. Its second nature for our visitors to sit around the tables long after another unforgettable day to recount stories of fun, adventure and exhilaration. And one thing you wont be short of after a few days at Umngazi River Bungalows is stories. Stories youll probably still be telling when your grandkids one day pay us a visit, and become part of the family too.

JUST FLY IN. Durbans Virginia airport is your

first port of call, where you can board a comfortable 14-seater aircraft for the short flight down to paradise. On the lofted Port St Johns airstrip youll be greeted by our friendly hosts and a cool refresher, to begin your escape from the rat race. S.A. Airlink also offers daily flights from Johannesburgs O.R. Tambo International Airport, direct to Umtata. Transfer arrangements to Umngazi can be made for you.

IN

HIT THE ROAD. If youre driving to the Wild Coast from

the Cape, get yourselves onto the N2 North, which runs directly through Umtata. In central Umtata, look out for the intersection with a sign for the Port St Johns road; its hard to miss. Then youll have a beautiful 90km drive through lush valleys and gentle hills, with some spectacular views along the way. The road is spacious and tarred all the way to our (also clearly marked) turn-off. From KwaZulu-Natal, take the Port Edward / Bizana / Flagstaff / Lusikisiki (R61) route and make your way past herds of cattle and friendly locals. If youre visiting us from Gauteng or Free State, pass Kokstad, drive for 15km and turn left onto the R61 towards Port St Johns. Once youre here, you will feel miles away from the rest of the world.
