From time immemorial, the position and role of the Nigerian youth in the socio
economic and political development of the country has been that of a prime mover. This is because, the 
youthsconstitute the crust of the future generation and are perceived as vital instrument in repositionin
gthe nation’s economy. Even though the patriotic commitment of nation building is theresponsibility of 
all citizens, the youths who are more energetic and purpose driven alwaysstand at the center stage. !f 
properly channeled and fully e"ploited, the innate potentials of theyouths can be transformed as a mean
s of development for the country.#outh are one of the greatest assets that any nation can have. Not onl
y are they legitimatelyregarded as the future leaders, they are potentially and actually the greatest inves
tment for acountry’s development. #oung women and men are, in particular, recognized as a vital resou
rcewhose future prospects are ine"tricablytied to that of their country. They are the valued possession o
f any nation or region. $ithout themthere can be no future. They are the center of reconstruction and de
velopment. They serve as agood measure of the e"tent to which a country can reproduce as well as sust
ain itself. The e"tentof their vitality, responsible conduct, and roles in society is positively correlated wit
h thedevelopment of their country.%ny nation that denies its youth the necessary enabling environment 
to participate in nation building process does so at its own ris&. This is because youth are the foundation 
of any society.Their energies, resourcefulness, character and orientation defines the pace of developme
nt andsecurity of a nation. Through their creative talents and labour power, a nation ma&es giant strides
in economic development and socio-political attainments. !n their dreams and hopes, a nationfinds her 
motivation' on their energies, she builds her strength and purpose. %nd as a result of their dreams and a
spirations, the future of a nation is assured.

WHO IS A YOUTH

Youth, as a concept varies from culture to culture and from society to society. !n most societies in Nigeri
a the progression from childhood to youth involves some systematic rites of passage.These rites have sy
mbolic significance in that, simply by participating in them, an individual achieves a new status and positi
on. uchnew status gains validity through genuine community action and recognition.ne thing is clear, 
the boundaries defining the transition from childhood to youth and from youthto adulthood are shifting 
and the crossover into each new stage is now manifested in differentways. The changes that young peop
le must negotiate do not occur as predictably as in the past,therefore, defining youth globally according 
to some e"act age range can be a very difficult tas&.The age range /

ate twenties and midthirties.

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF YOUTHS?

Youth has a very important role to play for society. For that we need to know why youth are so special.
It is so because they are young, full of energy and educated with rationality as their ultimate belief. Now
their role in society.

Reproduce: reproduction here does not mean increasing the population but it means that they full fill
the position left by the elder. Like son takes up the position of father in a company.

Protection: Youth are expected to protect their culture and tradition while at the same time makes it
better and embrace changes in the society. For instance it is youth only who becomes a part of political
movement for a major change in a country. They becomes a part of armed forces too, to safeguard the
freedom of people and so on

Growth: The growth of a country in all the spheres like Social, political and economic spheres mostly
depends on youth only. They with a fresh energy can perform better and ensure the growth of society.

augur well for our nation. for our nation to actually draw inspiration from the bursting strength and vigo
ur of the youth, the Nigeria youths both within theschores of the country or abroad should strive to be g
ood ambassadors of thecountry and reposition themselves as agents of positive change. #ouths shouldin
volve in activities that promote world and inter ethnic peace.

!n conclusion, the role of the youth in the nation building is crucial. They are problem solvers, have a pos
itive influence on other young people and the nation,and are e"tremely ambitious. They have the ability 
to create an identity for themselves and move the nation forward. >owever, they will not be able to dot
