Department of Human Anatomy
The Department of Human Anatomy acknowledges the immense contribution of its former
Department Chairman; Dr. Fernando Peraldo for his authorship, and dedication in coming up
with laboratory exercises suited for the medical student in Anatomy. The laboratory exercises
are constantly being improved to further develop competencies related to the course. With the
ongoing pandemic, the department will do its best to encourage the student to use available
social media resources to understand the questions being required for each exercise.

Learning objectives:
After going through this study unit, the student will be able to:
Procedures:
2. Illustrate separately the lines of orientation of the abdomen that will divide it into 4
and 9 areas.
4. What is the blood supply of the anterior abdominal wall and where does it originate
from?
The arteries of the anterior abdominal wall are divided into superficial and deep layers.
Superficial layer:
o Musculophrenic artery:

Branch of the internal thoracic artery
Supplies the superior anterolateral abdominal wall
o Superficial epigastric artery:
Branch of the femoral artery
Supplies the inferior anterolateral abdominal wall
o Superficial circumflex iliac artery:
Branch of the femoral artery
Supplies the inferior anterolateral abdominal wall
Deep layer:
o Superior epigastric artery:
Direct continuation of the internal thoracic artery
Runs inside the rectus sheath behind the rectus muscle
Supplies the superior part of the abdominal wall
o Inferior epigastric artery:
Branch of the external iliac artery
Courses through the rectus sheath and anastomoses with the superior
epigastric artery
Supplies the inferior part of the abdominal wall
o The 10th and 11th intercostal arteries and the subcostal artery supply the
lateral abdominal wall.

5. What is the venous drainage of the anterior abdominal wall? Where does it drain
into?
Superficial veins are paired with the arteries. Veins above the umbilicus drain into the
axillary vein via lateral thoracic vein and below the umbilicus into the femoral system
via the superficial epigastric vein into the great saphenous vein.A few par umbilical
veins pass deep from the umbilical region to anastomose with the portal vein (via
ligamentum teres).
7. What is/are the nerve supply of the anterior abdominal wall muscles?
