STRATEGIES ON IMPROVING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT TOWARDS

DISTANCE LEARNING

MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING

How Does it Goes?

 students are expected to complete the task and submit their outputs at the
end of the week.

 Open communication between the teacher to students and /or

teacher to parents/guardians is also part of the norm. This is
to ensure and monitor the progress of the students at home.

How do we help our students to make the most of these

distance learning experiences?
The term “engagement” refers to the amount and quality of time students
spend on distance learning activities. Distance learning activities can be in a
synchronous (real-time) learning experience where students have some type of
scheduled online interaction with a teacher or group, or asynchronous (not in
real time) learning experience where students interact with online resources at
their own pace.

Regardless of the mode of delivery, many students are asked to be engaged in

a way that’s new to them. Teachers might hold live or video-recorded class
lectures or activities, or perhaps parents are given digital learning resources to
work through with their children. Without effective supports for children from
teachers and parents in place at home, families can easily become disengaged
and frustrated.

What are the common issues of Modular Learning for a

typical Filipino student with a normal family set up?

TECHNICAL ELEMENT
- This has been the most substantial issue of distance learning.
Technicality involves the availability of devices both for the
students and teachers. These are mobile phones. Computers ,
Laptops, Printers and Internet Connection.
SENSE OF AUTHORITY
- as mentioned , the luxury of being less pressured. Parents become
teachers, but do not see to be as one.
PARENT’S/GUARDIAN EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
-it may sound off but let’s face the reality that not all parents are well
equipped with proper education.
FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION
- the comfort of studying at home with less or no supervision at all. Students tend
to divert their attention instead of focusing on prioritizing their home schooling first.

HOW TO INCREASE STUDENT’S ENGAGEMENT FOR SUCCESSFUL

DISTANCE LEARNING?

1. Lesson need to be shorter and focused

2. Add elements of interactivity to your lessons
3. Establish office hours and procedure for contacting you.
4. Give shout outs daily to your students.
5. Provide structures and routines to keep them engaged

Teaching Tips to help your student to maintain focus and stay

engaged during this time of distance learning

1. START WITH STUDENTS

- Consider their lives, their day and their well-being.
2. INCREASE PARENTS INVOLVEMENT
- The learning is happening at home and your best resource for your modular
learning are the parents.
3. BE THE “LEAD LEARNER” AS MUCH AS YOU ARE A “TEACHER” .
- Put another way, model ‘caring’ about learning and the role it plays in well-
being and growth. Show them what it means to be curious and active in this
new learning environment.
4. TRY TO ENSURE THE PRIVACY OF EACH STUDENT
-Another ‘easier said than done’ remote teaching tip. But privacy laws alone
make remote learning a maze of policies, laws, and potential pitfalls.
5. DESIGN FOR PARTICIPATION
-This isn’t just doable , but when possible , design lessons or activities with
lessons- that don’t just encourage “engagement” and student participation,
but that won’t work without engagement and participation.
6. EMPOWER STUDENTS: EMPHASIZE AUTONOMY AND
ENGAGEMENT
- The easiest strategies here are student voice and choice in what and how
they learn and demonstrate learning. This applies to lessons you’ve created
for students to do either together or apart.
7. THINK BEFORE , DURING AND AFTER LEARNING
-This will help you think carefully about what you want students to do–and be
able to do–before, during and after answering the module.
8. USE THE RIGHT PLATFORM FOR THE RIGHT TEACHING
- This one’s simple but don’t use Google Drive to share video and don’t use
Zoom to carry out ongoing conversations with students and don’t use
YouTube to host all student portfolios, etc.
9. CONNECT INDIVIDUALLY THROUGH MESSAGING INDIVIDUAL
“ROOMS”
- This helps build relationships with students while also improving the
credibility of online learning–helping them to see that they’re not simply
fulfilling their academic duty but rather connecting with people who care
around content designed to (hopefully) make their life better.
10. PROVIDE EFFECTIVE AND TIMELY FEEDBACK
- This is important, student should be aware of their progress throughout the
duration of the course.

What are the possible interventions needed to improve the

engagement of students?

FIRST, SUPPORT THE FAMILY

-Families are in some ways being put in the role of "learning coach" now, and
for some, this role is uncomfortable. We want to maximize the time families have to
give to supporting their child's learning, streamline it as much as possible with their
lives, and minimize their feeling like a full-time teacher or therapist.
- To support students, we must connect with them and their families to learn
more about their resources, priorities, and concerns. So, our first task is to reach out
to families to build relationships and find out how they're doing as a family.
PROBLEM SOLVED TO MAKE THE LEARNING ACCESSIBLE
-It's best for students to tell their classroom teachers where they need
additional support or access points, but special educators can facilitate this by
talking through with students the tasks teachers have assigned and asking
questions relative to students' past needs for accommodations or modifications.
For example, a student may have needed clarification and visuals to support
learning during in-person lessons. By thinking through the new way content is
presented by each teacher, we can guide students to identify where supports are
missing and what might be added to help them learn better. Such support may
be as simple as recorded videos to supplement student’s need.

PLAN YOUR WORK, WORK YOUR PLAN

-Good planning can relieve stress for both children and parents. Check in with
your kids about their plans and help them develop a written schedule not only for
the day, but for the week as a whole. Help them prioritize and learn to create
goals, tasks, and deadlines, just like adults do when they go to work. Tasks that
may not have been difficult for them while attending school in person can
become more challenging when learning from home, so it’s important to
reinforce boundaries and offer incentives for healthy behaviors.
WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER
-Remember that you’re not alone in this journey. Check in with other parents
to see what they’ve found effective or to ask if they need help. Share your
concerns and useful hints. If you need contact information for other parents or
resources, reach out to them. It is important that we all work together as a
community for the good of our students.
