PART 1

OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristic features of lathe.

OBSERVATIONS:

Machine Tool Identification (Table A)

Machine Major Functions

Components

Lathe Bed The main parts of the lathe, all

parts are bolted to the bed. It
includes the headstock, tailstock,
carriage rails and other parts.

The headstock is usually located

Headstock on the left side of the lathe and is
equipped with gears, spindles,
chucks, gear speed control levers,
and feed controllers.

Tailstock Usually located on the right side of

the lathe, the work piece is
supported at the end.

Carriage The carriage is located between

the headstock and the tailstock
and contains apron, saddle,
compound rest, cross slide and
tool post.
Chip Pan It is present at the bottom of the
lathe. Chip pan is used to collect
the chips that are produced during
the lathe

Hand Wheel It is the wheel which is operated by

hand to move cross slide, carriage,
tailstock and other parts which has
hand wheel.

Lead screw is used to move the

Lead Screw
carriage automatically during
threading.

It is used to move the carriage

from left to right and vice versa.

Feed Rod

PART 2

OBJECTIVE: To make the part shown in the sketch from a mild steel rod on a Lathe.
EQUIPMENT:

OUTLINE OF PROCEDURE :- Hold the bar in a three-jaw chuck and face the end with a
right- hand facing tool. Make central hole with a center drill. Repeat these' operations for
the other end of the bar. Hold the live centre in three jaw chuck and hold the job in a dog
carrier between centers. Turn the bar to the required diameter with rough cuts. Face
the steps and finishes the diameters to the required sizes. Machine the roots and the
groove with form tools. Machine the taper with the help of the cross-slide swiveling
arrangement. Groove the length as per given dimension. Cut the threads.

OBSERVATIONS
(a) Make a neat sketch of the part shown in the video.

(b) What is the purpose of the ‘dog carrier’ attachment?

It is a device that clamps around the workpiece and allows the rotary motion of
the machine's spindle to be transmitted to the workpiece.

(c) Discuss briefly how tapered portion was turned.

Taper turning is the turning process in which the cutting tool moves at an angle
to the axis of the workpiece so that a tapered shape is obtained in the workpiece.
In a tapered piece, the diameter of the workpiece changes uniformly from one end
to another.

(d) Discuss briefly the external thread cutting operation , and what processes and tools
were used?

An external thread, also known as a screw thread, is cut by hand with a round die
which is fixed in a die stock.

Technological process of cutting external threads

1) Clamping
2) Chamfering
3) Thread cutting
4) Cleaning
5) Checking

Tools for external threading

1 - Threading die
2 - Die holder

(e) Sketch the main drive unit of 'the- lathe and show how the speed steps are obtained.
