REFLECTION

The first topic for today’s LAC session is “Learner Diversity and Student Inclusion.” The speaker
talked about the three imperatives that are essential to practice teaching for diversity and inclusion, the
importance of diversity, how to encourage a culture of diversity, the history of Special Education in the
Philippines, what age does SPED end, and the various teaching strategies for inclusive education.
In my time as an elementary pupil, SPED was a separate class in a separate building in our
school. It cannot be helped that people give them special attention when meeting SPED pupils. In fact,
their building was treated as a museum-like territory where brails and sign language posters are observed
in awe. This was what was normal to me until one of the legally blind pupil from my elementary school
went in the Special Science Program in MONHS. It was a puzzle to me such that she was treated
differently in her previous school.
However, now I understand why that was so. This student was smart and can compete with those
that are not visually challenged. Now I know that what the school did to her was inclusion. She deserves a
holistic education as much as those that were not considered with special needs.
Discrimination is rampant in our society especially in the past when there wasn’t that much of an
awareness of it. Nonetheless, we now know better and as a teacher, it is my job to eliminate this culture ,
foster inclusivity and encourage diversity.

REFLECTION

For today’s LAC session, the topics are: 1) Content and Pedagogy of K to 12 Basic Education
Program, 2) Effective Verbal and Non-Verbal Classroom Communication Strategies to Support Learner
Understanding, Participation, Engagement, and Achievement, and 3) Implementation of School Policies
and Procedures to Foster Harmonious Relationships with Learners, Parents and Other Stakeholders.
The topic that resonates with me the most is the second one. As a teacher, especially when the
face-to-face classes will be reinstated in the teaching-learning arrangements in our school, I would most
likely be always in front of the class to be observed by my learners. Hence, it is important that I utilize my
body language well, not only my verbal language. This is very crucial for me as a newbie in the field such
that I may have the tendency to be stiff or my voice to be less audible considering my size. Therefore, I
should do innovations using my physical resources to communicate my lessons well with my learners.
Besides that, the third topic is also something that I should absorb by hear such that I should build
by network as much as I can especially that I am new in the field. I will not grow by myself; rather, I
should culture connections to implement school policies smoothly for the sake of the primary beneficiary
of my profession which are the learners.

REFLECTION

Today is my first time to observe a class observation through TLAC session. This took a
significant time in the morning session after the preliminaries. This is noteworthy to me because this
helped me gain insights for when it is my turn to be observed as a demo teacher.
Moreover, the afternoon talk tackled effective strategies that ensure safe and secure learning
environments to enhance learning through consistent implementation of policies, guidelines, and
procedures.
Teachers are the second parents of the learners. Therefore, it is our responsibility to keep the
learners safe as their parents would inside their homes and out. We discussed about what to do in case of
any disasters such as typhoon, earthquake, fire outbreak, and school shooting. In fact, I learned that the
existing building and classroom structure in the Philippines and in this school is not very safe according
to the standards by which they can be called safe in case of extreme emergencies. For example, windows
in the main building cannot be opened nor closed as they are permanently installed in place, some
classrooms only have one door which may be lacking in case there is a need for emergency or alternative
exits, and some doors open outwards which may not be very helpful in case of flash floods.

REFLECTION

There were three topics that were discussed during this LAC session: 1) 21 st Century Skills and
ICT Integration in Instruction and Assessment, 2) Establish a Learner-Centered Culture by Using
Teaching Strategies that Respond to Learners’ Linguistic, Cultural, Socioeconomic and Religious
Background, and 3) Strategies that Sustain Supportive Learning Environments That Nurture and Inspire
Learners to Participate, Cooperate and Collaborate in Continued Learning.
For the first one, the thing that I most enjoyed is learning Classpoint as an interactive medium of
instruction which can be most applied during my online classes. There are times when I worry that my
lessons are too dull or the learners find it monotonous that we keep using verbal exchanges in our class.
Moreover, for the second topic, I find it connected to that of one of the previous LAC sessions
discussion on diversity and inclusion. Learners are diverse in intelligences, interests, needs, and
background. Because of this, we should also vary our instruction to address these differences.
Finally, for the third part, in relation to the preceding topic, because the learners are diverse, I
think that they can learn from one another if they learn collaboratively together. For instance, gifted
learners can be of help to those that need more attention. Also, learners from the majority can learn from
those that belong in IP groups the diversity of cultures present in our archipelago.
