Declaration of Dependence
As we celebrate our nations birthday on July 4th, it is fitting that we remember some of the background to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It could not be signed until all delegates were there to vote and affix their signatures. For various reasons, there was a deadlock in the Delaware delegation, so they sent for Caesar Rodney. He had been summoned home earlier, but the express rider arrived at 2:00 a.m. The deadline was in seven hours. He took his best horse and on a stormy night rode through flooded streams and the muddy quagmire of roads 89 miles to Philadelphia. His mount was so exhausted that he led her the rest of the way. He arrived at 1:00 p.m. just as the final vote was being taken and had to be carried into the room. Barely able to speak, he uttered these words: As I believe the voice of my constituents and of all the sensible and honest men is in favor of independence, I vote for independence. That steadfastness was necessary in the upcoming revolution and founding of our nation and is so needed today. The last word concerning the Declaration was by the patriot, Samuel Adams: We have this day restored the Sovereign, to Whom alone men ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven, and from the rising to the setting of the sun, may His kingdom come. This testimony was particularly in response to his fellow founding father, Thomas Jefferson, who had composed most of the Declaration. He had borrowed heavily from the phraseology of popular sermons and other philosophical thoughts. However, as an unbeliever, he resisted any references to God, because he was an enlightened rationalist. But most of the Congress were professing Christians who insisted that God be referred to in the Declaration. Jefferson was so resentful that he sent copies of his original draft to some friends. We do hold these truths to be self-evident, that we do not just follow the laws of nature but natures God. He gives us a higher law of right and wrong from which to derive human law. May our nation once again know that the true source of life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness is found in the worship of our great Creator. May we say, In God we still trust, and remember the warning of William Penn, If we are not governed by God, we will be ruled by tyrants.
Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning service. Come and meet Dr. Wicker.
Beginning July 20, we launch into our second Summer Study, Doing the Right Thing. Our culture is beginning to disintegrate. Greed, corruption, fraud, deceit, and scandals populate the headlines. What precipitated this crisis?
Keep up with all that is happening in our church 24/7. Like us on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/FirstBaptistChurchNaples
