What is It

Elements of Design
The elements of design create every object around us.

1. Line is the most basic of all design elements. This

is a mark made with the aid of a drawing tool or brush.
Various types of lines exist, namely vertical,
horizontal, diagonal, zigzag and curved lines.

2. Shape is a two-dimensional area confined to an actual

line or an implied line (for instance, an edge). Shapes are
created in drawing when the ends of lines are joined
together to enclose areas. Examples of these are geometric
shapes and free-form or organic shape.

3. Value is used for reference to the

"value" of light in the art language. Value
deals with a color's lightness or
darkness. The lighter the color, the
greater the value. White represents the
highest or lightest value. In comparison,
the lowest or darkest color is black.

4. Space deals with the location of an object or entity

in, around, above or below it. Creation and
understanding of two-dimensional as well as three-
dimensional art works is significant. The space
things occupy with three-dimensional arts is real
just as the space around the object.

6
5. Color is the element of art which is
produced when light is reflected to the
eye striking an object. Without light
there is no color! Lights absence means
darkness, or blackness. Color has three
main characteristics: hue, value, and
intensity.

6. Texture refers to the surface quality in a work of art. We associate textures with
the way things look or feel. Everything has some types of texture. We describe things
as being rough, smooth, silky, shiny and fuzzy.

7. Form is very similar to shape, another element of

design. The difference is that the word form is used
as shapes in works of art which has three
dimensions rather than two. The length, width, and
depth are the parts of the three dimensions. Type
may be either be or free-form or organic forms.

Principles of Design
The principles of design are tools used to format the elements of design.

1. Balance refers to how, within the composition, the elements of art (line, shape,
color, meaning, space, form, texture) relate to each other in terms of their visual
weight in order to establish visual harmony. That is, one hand appears not heavier
than the other.

a. Symmetrically or the formal balance can be described as

having equal "weight" on equal sides of a centrally placed like a
seesaw. This is an easy way of balancing but such balance lends
monotony to the design.

b. Asymmetrically or the informal balance

refers when the structure decoration and accessories are
different on both sides from the center of the design. In this
design attraction, both sides are created by using different
accessories.

2. Contrast is the principle of design that refers to the

arrangement of opposite elements in a piece (light vs. dark
colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes,
etc.) to generate visual appeal and anticipation.

7
3. Direction refers to the use of movement to create
displacement visual illusion.

4. Emphasis is also known as

dominance or the center of interest.
Within the artwork emphasis is
characterized as an area or object that
draws attention and becomes a focal
point.

5. Proportion is the satisfying relationship between all

parts of the object. It also refers to the relative size and
scale of the various elements in a design.

6. Rhythm is the recurrence or repetition of one or more

elements within a visual format, creating harmony.

7. Harmony is oneness, which refers to a condition of

completeness with the use of all visual elements within a
format. Harmony is the visually satisfying effect of combining
similar or related elements.
Digital illustrator also use symbols based on the elements
and principles of design.

Symbols and Meanings

Some of the most popular symbols are:
Heart symbol means love, compassion or health.
Dove symbol means peace, love, or calm.
Tree symbol means growth, nature, stability, or eternal life.
Butterfly symbol means rebirth, beauty, or transformation.
Dog symbol means fidelity, protection, or friendship.
Lion symbol means courage, leadership, or sovereign.
Fox symbol means cleverness.
Dragon means power, wisdom or strength
Cloud, rain, snow and sun symbols: used to represent the weather

Shapes and lines and their meanings:

Circle means Completeness, cycles, continuation, or playfulness
Square means Stability, tradition, security, straightforward
Triangle means Transformation, movement, balance
Intersecting lines means Relationships, connectedness

8
Spiral means Growth, evolution, transformation
Five-pointed star means Excellence
Arrow means Direction, movement, force
Curved lines means Movement, connection, fluidity
Diagonal lines means Tension, excitement
Zigzag means confusion

Why are symbols used in graphic design or digital illustration?

Symbols are used if we can't find the words to explain our thoughts. We use
them to convey information and express emotions. Within the world of design, a
symbol is a mixture of graphic elements that can be used to reflect the image of a
brand, to tell its narrative and to influence the way people view it.
They have the power to cross language barriers and can help you engage with
your audience on a deeper level than is possible with just words.
Symbols can even be combined like words in a phrase to tell a powerful story and
give deep meaning.

16
What is It

The right choices of tools and materials give a right result. In making
illustrations it is very important to select tools that you are comfortable to use with
and fits to your taste. The materials and tools also vary based on the type of
illustrations you want to make. Remember that there are two main types of
illustrations, the traditional illustration and the digital illustration. Traditional
illustration includes woodcutting, pencil, charcoal, lithography, water color, acrylic
illustration and pen and ink, which refer mostly to hand-drawn work. Modern
illustrations include freehand digital illustration and vector illustration; these types
are done through the aid of modern technology and software such as Photoshop,
Adobe illustrator, Corel draw and other.

10 Suggested Steps in Illustration Process

Step 1: Explore your imagination. Feel free to let you mind fly in wander. Brainstorm
all the ideas that come along because it might be the best concept you can have.

Step 2: Figure out a theme or concept. Focus on one theme that caught your interest
as you wander. Think of the purpose or message you want to convey. Consider your
audience or clients.

Oh! Ann wants me

to make
illustration of her
favorite Korean
actor.

17
Step 3: Look for Inspiration. Find something or someone that will motivate you in
laying together your concept or theme. You can look for other illustrations so you
can avoid duplication from others work. The many the inspiration sources, the better.

Step 4: Narrow down the concept. Out of the broad concept you have, pick the main
subject. For example, your concept focuses on the Korean boy bands simplify it by
selecting specific member from the group as your main subject.

Who among the members of

BTS Ann likes the most?

Step 5: Sketch. This is it! Start sketching your subject. This is the time you will
solidify your concept. You can add all the details you want then later you can remove
it as you advance your work.

Let’s start sketching.

I will make Ann a
pencil illustration
since I only have
pencil and paper for
now.

18
Step 6: Add colors. Play around with colors and choose them
right. Colors are important since they help produce emotion
and enhance the message of the illustration. Sometimes color
choices depend on the mood of the illustrator.
Step 7: Block out colors and shapes. It’s time to start building
the illustration by blocking out the shapes. Some details you
include in your drawing needs to be blocked to give emphasis
to you main subject.
Step 8: Include light and shadow. The
source of light add a clear message to
your illustration. This also reflects the setting of your
illustration.
Step 9: Enhance texture. Adding right texture to your
illustration removes the flatness of you work and gives a tactile
result.
Step 10: Refine your work. Step back and look in details on
your work. What is wrong? What is
needed to remove or add? Check how the
elements work in your illustration. Check if the principles are
being observed in your final piece. If all answers are yes, then
it’s done!

The secret of making good illustration lies on how

you explore your ideas, enjoy the process of solidifying your
ideas through interpretation of concepts, and continue to
refine your ideas and work for it.

What’s More

Let’s do something from what you have read and from your previous lessons
in calculation and mensuration, specifically on scale and proportion.
