Lab 1 - Orthographic Plans
PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

The objective of this lab is to learn how to read and

explain orthographic plan drawings. Specifically, we
were taught how different line weights represented
various architectural features, how to apply line

weights in AutoCAD, and how to use a plot style ta-
ble. Additionally, we learned how to properly scale a
drawing, what level of detail is needed at each scale,
and how to export from AutoCAD.

This assignment asked us to add line weights to our

studio section of the King Pavilion. This gave us an
opportunity to become familiar with AutoCAD as
well as apply the skills we learned about hierarchy.

Lab 2 - Orthographic Projections and Elevations

The objective of this lab was to learn how to read and interpret Marika-Alderton House by Glenn Murcutt
orthographic elevation drawings. We were also taught how to create
an elevation by using orthographic projections and applying a
hierarchy of line weights to improve clarity using AutoCAD. As a final
step, color, tone, and shadows were added using Adobe Illustrator to
depict spatial depth and represent materiality.

backgrounds to the elevation from our second lab. These techniques
were applied using a combination of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe
Photoshop, making the render more realistic.

Lab 4 - Analytical Photography: Transition Space
The objective of this
assignment was to use
a camera to capture
certain aspects of
architecture and
architectural
moments. We were
taught about
composition, scale,
depth of field, and
various other
photography
techniques to assist us
in this assignment.
These three images

spaces around campus.

Lab 5 - Collage Drawings and Compositions
The objective of this lab was to learn and execute
different photocollage methods such as:
perspective scaling, depth of field, foreground and
background, and juxtaposition. A combination of
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop were used
to apply line weights, add entourage, color, and
tone.

semester.” Three students are in attendance. The

Lab 7 - Introduction to 3D Modeling
The objective of this lab was to begin to learn and
understand the basic concepts of 3D modeling
using Rhino. The assignment was to construct a 3D
model using 2D drawings and export the model as a
2D drawing. The drawings were then edited in
Adobe Illustrator for clarity and improved line
weights.

Individual Project

The image shown is the 2D representation of the 3D model created.

Lab 8 - 3D Cameras, Perspective, and Promenade

The objective of this assignment was to learn about

and understand the importance of the camera in
digital models. We were asked to create five various
views depicting the interior and exterior of a building
model in Rhino and export them as a 2D drawing.
Images were then edited for line weights and clarity
using Adobe Illustrator.

The two images above are exterior shots showing alternate sides of the same building.

The objective of this assignment was to learn how to create complex renderings The above view uses a previous rendering with the addition of entourage.
using a variety of software. We learned how to apply different photo-collage
techniques and brushes and how to convey materiality, scale and mood. These
render-ings were done using a combination of Rhino and V-Ray while the post-
rendering and entourage was added using both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe
Photoshop.

Lab 11 - Introduction to Computational Design
The objective of this assignment was to apply basic
elements of a script and demonstrate how that
applies to architecture, while understanding
geometry and variables in three dimension. This
assignment asked us to write a basic script to
perform a simple computational task by apply a
parametric transformation of geometry and
manipulating variables.

The image above features the ‘Surprised Pikachu’ meme. Using a pre-made script to create repeating patterns of circles, the
image is recreated from the original.

Lab 12 - Introduction to Environmental Simulations
The objective of the first part of this assignment was
to create our own 3D models of a structure and study
how the sun affects it over various days of the year. 1/21
8:38 am
We observed five times of the day in three seasons of
the year to demonstrate this. The model was created
using Rhino and the renderings were put out using V-
Ray. Images were then edited for clarity and to show
the section cut using Adobe Illustrator.

Lab 12 - Introduction to Environmental Simulations
The objective of the second part of this assignment 6/21 Shadows
was to become familiar with Grasshopper and Diva to
depict multiple environmental factors to compare
simultaneously. Simulations were done on a
structure modeled in Rhino and employed a
combination of Grass-hopper and Diva to run the
desired scripts. Images were then cropped, compiled,
and labeled using Adobe Acrobat.
