Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The lack of public knowledge of a location's or place's cleanliness has become an issue
that requires specific care. We may observe waste dispersed everywhere as a result of the
numerous, resulting in mountains of garbage in gutters, rivers, and oceans, which can harm the
environment's ecosystem.

There are some projects that was develop for the environmental problem and sustainable
development, they used different system that can helps people and environment. These are the
different project that was created namely; (1) Designing the Automated Smart Adriano Uno-
Based Automatic Trash Analysis and Monitoring System, the goal of this smart trash system is
that can operate with contact with an object and will send an information about the capacity of
the trash can via mobile phones or smartphones to be immediately discarded and cleaned. (2)
Smart wireless ultra-sonic sensors measurement real-time fill level data from waste containers or
bins and forecast the ideal time and route for emptying each container would be used as a
solution suits for municipal waste collection. (3) An IoT-based waste management system
monitored by cloud, smart waste bin is based on ultrasonic-level sensor and various gas sensors
which automatically sense the hazardous gases and the maximum limit of waste. The approach is
unique and uses cloud and mobile app-based monitoring. (4) Smart Waste Collection System,
This system is supported by an android app named “SWC” and fire base real time data for more
efficient user friendly usage. Where cloud storage is also makes it easier for storage of collection
record providing the authorized origination to control manage and audit performance data. (5)

GSM module to Garbage collection local central office to notify that garbage can is exceeded its
capacity and disposal of waste is required.

At present, the Isabela State University Cauayan, Campus, open rubbish bins are used,
allowing students and even workers to readily toss anything on them. Due they cannot properly
monitor the rubbish because of their other responsibilities, utilities will usually toss it out when it
is overflowing. As a result, there is a lot of mess, pollution, and even insects like mosquitoes that
can spread diseases to everyone in the area. With these, the researchers were inspired to develop
a technical solution that addressed the school's specific issues.

This project entitled "Smart Garbage Bin with SMS Support" was to develop to automate
and to easily monitor the garbage bins of the Isabela State University Cauayan, Campus. This
study proposed a new framework that enables monitor the level waste bin in real-time, to assist
the waste management activity. The system framework is based on sensor that can detect the
distance of wastes from garbage bin.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study entitled "Smart Garbage Bin with SMS Support” aims to provide a solution to;

To provide a much more efficient way to manage waste;

Improved environment (i.e. no overflowing bins and less unpleasant odours);

improve waste management in any area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.3.1 General Objectives

The project's main goals were to create a monitoring system that uses an sensor to detect
the real-time level of garbage inside garbage bins, a SMS that notifies the administrator when the
garbage level inside the garbage bin reaches the maximum level, a garbage bin that automatically
send a messages to the phone after detecting object closer, and to automatically notify the users
of the garbage level when the garbage bin is already full.

1.3.2 Specific Objectives

This study entitled "Smart Garbage Bin with SMS Support” seeks to answer the following;

 the system is intended to reduce the waste of valuable human resources such as human
effort, time, and cost, as well as the need for a Smart Garbage Bin with SMS support
 to develop a module that will send an SMS notification to the admin when it reaches the
maximum level of the garbage's inside the garbage bin using transceiver via the webpage;
 To capture the level of effectiveness of the Smart Garbage Bin with SMS Support using
Sensor in terms of;

1.4 Importance of the Study

This study focused mainly on the design and effectiveness with the development of the system
using Smart Garbage Bin with SMS support that will help with individuals and to environment.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

The research focus on the waste collection process. The status of the bin is will be
monitored from administration. Recent this studies and researchers will be used a modern stylist
and intelligent trash bin. The study will focus on the smart garbage bin with SMS support as a
whole and not only to the waste but also to the health of humans.

This research will not extend to the advanced factor that garbage bin condition and
performance, such as, the complex components for building the project and this special features
been manufacturers put in their design. However, the basic structure of the design of the bin will
be covered. It will also show the relation of the factors with one another.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The significance of this project is:

 Help environmental management firm in improving environment of the society

 Enhance the prior project by including a new feature.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays cities are the source of environmental issues. Collection and disposal of waste
B. Chowdhury and M. U. Chowdhury (2007). However, the need to maintain a clean and healthy
environment is a worldwide concern. J. Sarkis and Q. Zhu (2017). This trend is currently turning
toward smart devices and internet of things (IoT) answers to frequent problems Waste
management difficulties, for example F. Mattern (2003). The primary focus is to enhance the
waste collection procedure. Industry's smart systems serve a purpose. However, the cost of
implementing such solutions remains high BigBellySolar (2010). The purpose of the project is to
present a low-cost smart garbage can for localized and simple scenarios like campuses, This
paper's literature will present a an assessment of previous related publications solutions. The
section on methodology and methods will follow. Describe how the system and all of the system
work Aside from the design of the smart, software was used in this project, the test findings will
be discussed.

LITERATURE REVIEW

IoT-based project Smart bin From (M.R Mustafa and K.N.F Ku Azir). Their designed
system includes ultrasonic sensors that assess garbage levels, an ARM microcontroller that
regulates system operation, and everything is linked to ThingSpeak. This paper demonstrates a
method that enables waste management to monitor the level of rubbish depth inside the dustbin.
Moreover, the system displays the status of four types of garbage in real time through LCD and
ThingSpeak, storing the data for future usage and analysis, such as predicting the peak level of
garbage bin fullness. This technology is expected to produce a greener environment by
proactively monitoring and controlling garbage collection via the Internet of Things.
Another work on IoT based by S. K. Memon,(2019) Smart garbage monitoring and collection
system using WeMos & Ultrasonic sensors, The goal of their project is to create an IoT-based
cost-effective system that can monitor everyday rubbish in real time utilizing smart technologies
such as WeMos and Ultrasonic sensors, while consuming the waste management authority'
limited resources. The results demonstrate exact real-time monitoring of garbage inside bins.

Non-Bio waste. Waste that isn't biodegradable. It does not collect all garbage. Collectively. The
lid of the smart bin opens automatically and closing using a servo motor depending on the
detection of an object when a user brings garbage, the YOLO algorithm is used. In the other, it
will always be open, which leads to to offensively odorous the ultrasonic sensor with raspberry

trash cans. When the bin reaches it communicates the level threshold value via the BinEye
application. Via cloud and also displays the waste status on the An LCD screen is mounted in
front of the bin.

Software Development Methodology
The bin's state is determined by using a sensor to calculate the distance between the bin's lid
and the trash. A distance limitation will be determined using the bin dimensions. When the
distance measuring sensor indicates that the bin is full, a microcontroller board orders a
GSM module to send an SMS alert with the bin alert message to a specified phone number.
A sanitary worker determines the position of the bin, and the filled bin is identified using the
Number provided by the SMS alert. The system returns to its default state when the sanitary
worker empties the container.
