d) Research Groups

Here are some top research groups from around the world working on Analog, IC design
and high speed RF communication areas. There are some very useful resources affiliated
with these like the series of lectures from Prof. Nagendra Krishnapura from IITM,
lectures by Prof. Ali Hajimiri from CalTech, Prof. Behzad Razavi from UCLA and many
talks on research in these labs:

1. Integrated Circuits and Systems Group, IITM (http://www.ee.iitm.ac.in/vlsi/start)

2. Centre for Nano Science and Engg, IISc (http://www.cense.iisc.ac.in/)

3. NeuRonICS Lab, IISc (https://labs.dese.iisc.ac.in/neuronics/)

4. High Speed IC Lab, CalTech (https://chic.caltech.edu/)

5. Communication Circuits Lab, UCLA (http://www.seas.ucla.edu/brweb)

d) Online Stores

Want to buy electronic modules, chips, discretes, maker stuff online? These are some of the
best local Indian web stores you can search for:

Robu ET Store Sunrom

Electronics Comp REES52 Robo Elements

e) Free Samples

Who else wants free stuff for trying out cool projects and prototyping? Some of the top
semiconductor companies are kind and generous enough to send out free sample parts to
makers and students, but purely for non-commercial use. All of these work only with
non-gmail or commercial e-mail IDs like xyz@company.com, xyz@university.edu,
xyz@ieee.org etc.

Also, Ladyada from Adafruit has compiled a very nice free stuff list years ago which is here.

Note: Make sure that you are up to all of the T&C before ordering free samples from
respective companies.

1. Texas Instruments : TI has a university sampling program exclusively for students where
a limited variety of analog, power chipsets can be ordered. They also provide free
samples on most of their products directly through the ordering page of respective parts. 5
parts per-order and multiple orders can be placed together. They usually ship out without
any questions.

2. Analog Devices : ADI allows sampling generally on their product page and is available
for most of their products with a limit of 4 parts per-order. Lead time is long and they
wait to confirm and ship parts.

3. Microchip : Microchip is very generous and provides one free sample order per month
with a limit of 2 parts per order. They independently ship out samples via local sales and
are fast.

4. Maxim : Maxim ships out free samples upon request on the product page and
project/application details must be submitted to confirm the order.

5. Silicon Labs : SiLabs provides free samples for most of their products and ships them via
Mouser distributor. Order can be placed from the product page of the respective part.

6. Pulse Electronics : Pulse uses DigiKey as their distributor and they have a lot of discretes
like inductor kits, transformer kits and antennas under sample program.

7. Micron : Micron has different variants of their SPI, I2C based memory chips available for
sampling and they distribute via DigiKey.

8. TE Connectivity : TE connectivity has several variants of their click-fit connectors, ports,

cables etc for sampling and they independently ship out samples.

9. Dialog Semiconductor : Dialog/Adesto have memory chips under their sampling program
and they use DigiKey as a distributor.

10. Hittite Microwave(Analog Devices) : Hittite has several PLL/RF/MMIC chips, evaluation
kits etc available for sampling and they use DigiKey as the distributor. Project details are
needed to be submitted to confirm the sample order.

11. Coilcraft : via official website and product page sampling option. Shipped to the local
sales team and then dispatched to the customer with a local courier.

12. Samtec : via official website and product page sampling option. Shipped directly with
UPS service.

The above mentioned details are as per my sampling experiences in 2020-2021 and all links
are valid. Customs charges/duties may incur for some samples depending on the value of
order which has to be paid by the receiver/customer. Typically samples are shipped with DHL
by TI and Mouser, FedEx by ADI and UPS by DigiKey.

f) Hardware and Software Tools (low cost)

1. Microcontroller Development Boards

a. Arduino Boards : These are low cost, get-started boards for anyone and has an easy
programming interface, a lot of user community support and project examples. This is
a fully open source platform and a lot of daughter boards/modules are available to
build upon.
b. ESP32/ESP8266 Boards : Low cost tool to design and prototype for IoT based
applications. ESP32 SoC has integrated WiFi, BLE connectivity and has a 32-bit
Tensilica core.
c. Texas Instruments Launchpad :
d. STM Nucleo and Discovery Boards :
e. Raspberry Pi Pico
