ILO3: “The Nature, Significance and Definition of Learning “

Topics:
1. Types of Learning
2. Theories of Learning
3. Classical Conditioning
4. Transfer of Learning
5. Motivation in Learning

As a teacher we used different types of techniques on how our

students learn from us. Learning can be learned at home while they are

growing. Learning is a key process in human behavior. All living is

learning. If we compare the simple, crude ways in which a child feels and

behaves, with the complex modes of adult behavior, his skills, habits,

thought, sentiments and the like- we will know what difference learning

has made to the individual. The individual is constantly interacting with

and influenced by the environment. This experience makes him to

change or modify his behavior in order to deal effectively with it.

Therefore, learning is a change in behavior, influenced by previous

behavior. As stated above the skills, knowledge, habits, attitudes,

interests and other personality characteristics are all the result of

learning. All learning involves activities. These activities involve either

physical or mental activities. They may be simple mental activities or

complex, involving various muscles, bones, etc. So also, the mental

activities may be very simple involving one or two activities of mind or

complex which involve higher mental activities. According to Jack

Lewman, “Never stop learning; for when we stop learning, we stop

growing”.
There are also theories of learning that we discussed this week. Different

philosophers stated their theories about learning. We have learned a lot in this

lesson. Also, I learned from my classmates on how they handled different

situation and what they did when they encounter like those things in class.

Transfer of learning means the use of previously acquired knowledge and skills

in new learning or problem-solving situations. Thereby similarities and

analogies between previous and actual learning content and processes may

play a crucial role. So, a teacher, we should help the learners on how they solve

the problem and let them think.

Motivation is a condition that activates and sustains behavior toward a goal.

It is critical to learning and achievement across the life span in both informal

settings and formal learning environments. Motivated students are much

more likely to achieve their potential and find success. Motivation is an

essential ingredient in effective teaching and learning. It not only yields

more positive behavior in students, but it also contributes to a greater

sense of wellbeing. Understanding how to motivate children and young

people in education is crucial, if we are to provide them with the best

possible start in life. In education, motivation helps children and young

people to focus their attention on a key goal or outcome. In doing so, they

are unfazed by possible distractions, and are therefore able to maintain

their attention during longer periods of time. Students who are motivated

display goal-orientated behaviors. They take initiative, show resilience,

harness their curiosity, and care for and respect their work. They are

equipped to orchestrate their own learning journey.
