INTRODUCTION

TATA STEEL

TATA Steel Limited formerly known as Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited (TISCO) is an
Indian steel manufacturing company based in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. TISCO was founded
by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata and established by Sir Dorabji Tata on 26 August 1907. The
first steel ingot was manufactured on 16 February 1912. During the First World War (1914–
1918). By 1939, it became the largest steel plant operated in the British Empire.

Attempts were made in 1971 & 1979 to nationalize, but both remained unsuccessful. Then
Minister for Industries George Fernandes, at the instigation of Biju Patnaik, Minister for
Steel threatened nationalization, but due to the unions protests the move failed. In 1990, the
company expanded and established it subsidiary, TATA Inc, in New York. Tata Steel is
among the top steel producing company in the world with an annual crude steel capacity of
34 million tons per annum. With an annual capacity of 13 million ton, it’s a second largest
steel company after Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) in India. It operates in 29 countries
with key operation in India, Netherland & U.K. and employs around 80,500 people. Tata
Steel primarily serves customers in the automotive, construction, consumer goods,
engineering, packaging, lifting and excavating, energy and power, aerospace, shipbuilding,
rail and defense and security sector. TATA Steel became the backbone of Indian economy.

JINDAL STEEL AND POWER LIMITED

JSPL is an industrial powerhouse with a dominant presence in steel, power, mining and
infrastructure sectors. Part of the US $ 18 billion OP Jindal Group this young, agile and
responsive company is constantly expanding its capabilities to fuel its fairy tale journey that
has seen it grow to a US $ 3.3 billion business conglomerate. Led by Mr. Naveen Jindal, the
youngest son of the legendary Shri O.P. Jindal, the company produces economical and

efficient steel and power through backward and forward integration. From the widest flat
products to a whole range of long products, JSPL today sports a product portfolio that caters
to markets across the steel value chain. The company produces the world's longest (121-
meter) rails and it is the first in the country to manufacture large-size parallel flange beams.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
 To analyze and understand how a major steel industry in India has financially
performed in last 3 years.
 Steel industry which is subject to frequent fluctuation in the market transaction, Tata
steel too faces such fluctuation. How its financial function is adjusted to the market
condition & to analyze it.
 To understand how the company has utilized its assets in order to achieve stability in
financial condition.
 To determine the financial position of the company.
 Financial performance tells investors about the general well-being of a firm.

NEED OF STUDY
 It helps to compare how both the company has performed in last 3 year in order to
ensure goods return stake holder.
 Understand how the company has contributed in real terms in terms of its steel
output, in its capacity utilization and lastly how it contributed to a country’s economy.
 To carry out comparison of their previous performance and offer relevant
suggestions.
 It's a snapshot of its economic health and the job its management is doing .

 The financial comparison between two cos. identifies how well they generate
revenues and manages its assets, liabilities, and the financial interests of its stake- and
stockholders.
 The comparison is necessary to know how both of them contributes to GDP and how
it helps in growing India in various aspects.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN:

Research design of the project work will be analytical and empirical research in nature. This
study is using facts and information which is already available, and analyze these to make a
critical evaluation of the study. The present study makes use of verifiable evidence I.E,
Statistics of various items income and expenditure will be analyzed using Technical Analysis
(Pie charts) and Fundamental Analysis.

COLLECTION OF DATA:

This research study is exclusively based on secondary data available from company’s website
or any various authenticate website and media published annual reports.

DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUE:

The collected data is analyzed and interpreted by using the following statistical tools with the
help of charts and diagrams:

 Descriptive analysis
 Percentage analysis
 Technical analysis using charts
 Fundamental statement using full statement

PERIOD OF STUDY:

The study is conducted as referred above for the period of 3 years.

LIMITATION OF STUDY
Limitations are matters and occurrences that arise in an experiment which are totally out of
control.

I. This study has taken 3 years data which is a very short period so it will not reflect to
proper accuracy as compare to longer time study.
II. This study is based on secondary data, so the data inherited from its official website
which should be taken into consideration.

SCOPE OF STUDY

 To make a comparison of a financial performance of last 3 years.


 To make a detail study of balance sheet & profit/loss.
 To analyze the comparative ratios and that with interest rate.
