Alcatel-Lucent Multi-Standard distributed BTS solution is based on the RRH2×40 unit, built on
the principle of MCPA technology. There is also a synonym often used for the RRH2x40 calling
it MC-RRH 900 which serves the entire EGSM 900 band or MC-RRH 1800 which serves the
entire GSM 1800 band.
The RRH2×40 is an outdoor Remote Radio Head which can be mounted close to the antenna.
This has the advantage to reduce feeder losses and therefore improve coverage. It reduces
also the required BTS footprint.
One RRH2×40 serves one sector. It encompasses all the functionalities of the MC-TRX and
additionally the ones of the Antenna Network.
- RRH2x40: The main radio unit containing the transmitter and receiver functions as
well as the GSM baseband processing.
- Antennas: Normal GSM antennas to be used
- AC/DC conversion: Required to provide 48V DC for the RRH2x40 and provide battery
backup in case of loss of power grid
- SUMX19’’: Provides the GSM transmission termination and Base Station Control
function (for further information on SUMX19’’ please refer to A28)
To add WCDMA, a WCDMA digtal unit (typically a 9326 or 9926 d2U) is used to provide
WCDMA baseband functions, and this is mounted in the same cabinet as the SUMX19”. A
second optical fibre is used to connect the d2U to a CPRI port on the RH2x40.
2 Benefits of RRH2x40
RRH2x40 provides RF power of 2 times 40W, supporting high downlink powers and is
ideally suited to provide up to 6 GSM carriers.
In GSM-WCDMA mode, one Tx path with 40W is allocated to GSM, supporting 4 carriers.
The other Tx path with 40W is allocated to WCDMA, supporting typically 1 carrier at
40W or 2 carriers at 20W.
RRH2x40 is designed to make available all the benefits of a Distributed BTS – excellent
RF characteristics, low OPEX and low CAPEX. These benefits are available whether the
operator chooses a truly distributed deployment, or groups RRHs and digital units to
implement a conventional Macro BTS site.
A site can be on air in less than one day, a fraction of the time required for a
traditional BTS.
RRH can be installed where size and weight prevent deployment of traditional
Macro BTSs, providing coverage and capacity in previously inaccessible
locations.
MC-RRH is an easy-to-install product: the installation can be done by a single
person: there is no need for a crane, reducing installation times and costs.
Savings in civil works are achieved by removing the need for reinforcing steel
frames or concrete plinths to support heavy BTS cabinets. (Cabinets may weigh
hundreds of Kg, while RRH2x40 weighs only 18Kg)
A single SUMX19’’ can serve several remote sites further reducing equipment
costs.
When mounting MC-RRH adjacent to the antenna, the need for costly long RF
feeders and TMAs is eliminated.

The RRH2×40 module has the same Multi-standard capabilities as the MC-TRX: GSM only,
GSM+WCDMA, GSM+LTE, WCDMA only, LTE only.
The RRH2×40 architecture is based on 2 MCPA, each at 40W, as shown in the picture below, in
order to be MIMO ready with a single RRH2x40 module. The name is derived from this
architecture meaning it uses 2 times a 40W PA. Unlike for the MC-TRX where the use of 2
modules per sector for MIMO configuration is acceptable inside a macro Base Station, for the
RRH2x40, the space/weight constraints are more stringent and MIMO configurations need to
be supported on a single module.
The GSM digital base band processing is embedded in the RRH2×40 (as for MC-TRX). A GSM
system has not the same strong processing requirements as WCDMA. Therefore a pooling gain
via an externalized GSM baseband processing unit cannot be achieved. In term of system
robustness it is also better to include it because if the GSM baseband fails only one sector is
affected but not the entire site is out of service.
The specific components added into the RRH2x40 for the GSM baseband processing are
neglect able from an MTBF point of view. The foreseen GSM baseband capacity is sufficient to
cover today features as well as the upcoming GSM enhancements. Nevertheless the MC-RRH
is also able to be used as a pure remote unit if the future requires also in GSM a centralized
baseband processing.
In a classical GSM BTS, each carrier is amplified separately. The common GSM BTS installation
consists usually of two antennas per sector for Rx diversity. In cells with more than two TRX,
carriers need to be combined before being transmitted via one of the two antennas. This
combining results in big power losses (To combine two carriers to one single antenna needs
one stage of combining which results in a loss of at least 3 dB, i.e. 50% of the power is lost).
The MC-RRH (RRH2x40) is based on the same Multi Carrier technology known from the
MC-TRX. It aims to overcome the power loss in combiner stages. Within a Multi Carrier Power
Amplifier, the carriers are combined before being converted to an analogue signal. The
analogue signal (the sum of several carriers) is then amplified through one single PA. One
single Tx path out of the amplifier module contains already several GSM carriers and does not
need to be combined anymore. This amplified signal is then transmitted through one antenna.
The Multi Carrier technology brings a great flexibility and provides new exciting possibilities:
Due to the de facto removal of wideband combining of GSM carriers in the path to the
antenna the overall power efficiency of a GSM BTS is increased. Radio power is simply not
lost in the combiner stages anymore.
When used in GSM-WCDMA mode or W-CDMA mode, the same principle of no combiner is
maintained. The 2x40W of RF is made available at the antenna connector after only minimal
duplexer losses, whether 1 carrier, 2 carriers or more are configured.
When used in LTE mode, the same principle of no combiner is maintained. The 2x40W of RF is
made available at the antenna connector after only minimal duplexer losses, whether 1
carrier, 2 carriers or more are configured.
4 RRH2x40 configurations
4.1 2G only
The following table describes the output power values in case of pure GSM.
4.2 GSM+WCDMA: 1 PA 2G + 1 PA 3G
This configuration adds a WCDMA 9326 or 9926 d2U digital unit to the core GSM configuration.
The GSM SUMX19” retains OAM control of the RRH. WCDMA WMS manages configuration of the
WCDMA functions and any WCDMA-specific alarms. The WCDMA digital unit is connected to
the RRH2x40 using a dedicated CPRI optical fibre to one of the CPRI ports on the RRH. More
details about the WCDMA digital unit area available at [A27]. One PA is allocated for use by
GSM and the other PA for use by WCDMA. The Rx signals on both antennas are made available
as a diversity pair to both GSM and WCDMA.
The GSM part functions are already described in the previous sections
The WCDMA part provides 1 or 2 WCDMA carriers anywhere within the RRHs 25MHz
operational bandwidth. The 2 carriers may be adjacent, or disaggregated. Extra-narrow Rx
filters are planned, to reduce inter-technology interference in crowded spectrum where the
full 5MHz normally allocated to WCDMA is not available.
The table below shows some configurations with one PA dedicated per technology, i.e. one PA
for GSM and one PA for WCDMA. These are target values and are subject to the SW support in
the corresponding release.
This configurations allows the MC-RRH to be operated in 3G mode only, i.e. without any GSM
dependency.
The WCDMA WMS manages configuration of the entire MC-RRH. The WCDMA digital unit is
connected to the RRH2x40 using a dedicated CPRI optical fibre to one of the CPRI ports on
the RRH. More details about the WCDMA digital unit area available at [A27]. Both PAs are
allocated for use by WCDMA. The Rx signals on both antennas are made available as a
diversity pair to WCDMA.

5 Site configurations
There are different site configurations possible. A site contains generally the following parts:
One SUMX19’’ is able to control several RRH2x40 in 2G mode. Up to 3 RRH2x40 are supported,
interconnected in a star configuration. The HW supports more than 3 RRH2x40 per SUMX19’’
thanks to chain and ring configuration, foreseen to interconnect RRH2x40. All RRH2x40
interconnected to the same SUMX19’’ are forming a distributed BTS.
In 3G or LTE mode (multistandard), the MC-RRH can be connected to the 9926 BBU.
If a site shall be upgraded with a second technology like WCDMA or LTE it needs additional
baseband capacity for processing. Therefore a BBU (Base Band Unit), often also called d2U,
needs to be added to the site and interconnected to the RRH2x40.
SUMX19’’ box and WCDMA/LTE BBU can be hosted in an existing cabinet (with enough space
for additional standard 19” equipment) or in a dedicated Site Support Cabinet (SSC). The SSC
will integrate AC/DC converters and batteries for power back-up.
