➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Mathematics 10 Learner’s Material
➢ Chapter: 7 Pages: 366 - 377 Topic: Measures of Positions for Ungrouped
Data
➢ Objective: To solve problems involving Measures of Position for
Ungrouped Data.

Let Us Discover

This Simplified Self-learning Module (SSLM) will help you recognize and
understand real-life problems that can be represented using the concepts of measures
of position and apply these concepts in making decisions based on the statistical
solutions obtained in the given set of ungrouped data.
In solving problems involving Measures of position for Ungrouped data, follow
these steps:

a. Arrange the data in increasing or ascending order (lowest to highest).

b. Locate the position of the score in the distribution. Use the formula to locate
the position of each quantile.
𝑘
For quartile, Qk= (n + 1) where:
4
𝑘
For decile, Dk = (n + 1) n = total number of data
10
𝑘
For percentile, Pk = (n + 1) k = quantile
100
c. Interpolate the value obtain (if the result is not a whole number):
Steps: 1: Subtract the 2nd data from the 3rd data.
2: Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the second
step (Position of quantile) and add the result in step 2 to the 2nd
or smaller number.

d. Interpret the results.

Example 1.
The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who came into
his café each hour in a day. The results were 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and 11.

Find the following:

a. lower quartile
b. upper quartile of the data
c. 3rd decile
d. 80th percentile
Solution:
In order to find the quartiles, we need to arrange the scores in ascending order
5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14, 17

Q1 Q2 Q3

a. Lower quartile: 25% of the data has a value ≤ Q1 or u can use the formula,
𝑘
𝑄𝑘 = 4 (𝑛 + 1), and round off to the nearest integer.
1 1 12
𝑄1 = 4 (11 + 1) = 4 (12) = 4 = 3 . Q1 is the 3rd element. Therefore,
Q1 = 9. Hence, 9 customers came to the coffee shop on the first 3 hours of
the day.
b. Upper quartile: 75% of the data has a value ≤ Q3 or you can use the formula,
𝑘 3 3 36
𝑄𝑘 = (𝑛 + 1), 𝑄3 = (11 + 1) = (12) = =9
4 4 4 4
th
Q3 is the 9 element, Therefore, Q3 = 14. Hence, 14 customers came
to the coffee shop during last hour of the day.
c. 3rd decile
𝑘
Using the formula, 𝐷𝑘 = 10 (𝑛 + 1), and round off to the nearest integer.
3 3 36
𝐷3 = (11 + 1) = (12) = = 3.6
10 10 10
Interpolate: 3.6th is between 3rd and 4th position, 9 and 9, therefore, D3 = 9.
Hence, 9 customers came to the coffee shop during the 4 th hour of the day.
d. 80th percentile
𝑘
Using the formula, 𝑃𝑘 = 100 (𝑛 + 1), and round off to the nearest integer.
80 80 960
𝑃80 = (11 + 1) = (12) = = 9.6
100 100 100
Interpolate: 9.6th is between 9th and 10th position, 14 and 14. Therefore,
P80 = 14. Hence, 14 customers came to the coffee shop.

Let Us Try

Example 2:
A year ago, Angela began working at a computer store. Her supervisor asked
her to keep a record of the number of sales of computer parts she made each month.
The following data set is a list of her sales for the last 12 months:
34, 47, 1, 15, 57, 24, 20, 11, 19, 50, 28, 37

GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 02.00, Effective April 21, 2021

Use Angela's sales records to find:
a) the lower quartile
b) the 8th decile
c) the 45th percentile
Solution(a):
1. arrange the data in ascending order:
1, 11, 15, 19, 20, 24, 28, 34, 37, 47, 50, 57
2. locate the position of the score in the distribution.
a. Position of the lower quartile (Q1),
1 1 13
𝑄1 = (12 + 1) = (13) = = 3.25
4 4 4
Interpolate: 3.25th is between 3rd and 4th position, 15 and 19.
19 – 15 = 4 (.25) = 1, then 15 + 1 = 16, therefore Q1 = 16. Hence, 16
computer parts were sold by Angela on the 3rd month.
Direction: Fill in the blanks with the correct answer.
Solution(b):
b. Position of the 8th decile (D8),
8 8 104
𝐷8 = 10 (12 + 1) = 10 (13) = 10 = ____________
Interpolate: ______th is between 10th and 11th position, ____ and ____.
50 - 47 = 3 (.4) = .3, then 47 + .3 = 47.3, therefore D8 = _____. Hence,
an estimated 47.3 computer parts were sold by Angela between 10th and 11th month.
Solution(c):
c. Position of the 45h percentile (P45),
45 45 585
𝑃45 = (_______) = (13) = = _________
100 100 10
Interpolate: 5.85th is between ____ and ____ position, 20 and 24.
24 – 20 = 4 (.85) = 3.4, then 20 + 3.4 = 23.4, therefore P45 = 23.4.
Hence, ____________________________________________________________.

Activity 1: You’re My Universe!

The scores of Miss Universe candidates from the 10 judges were recorded as
follows:
8.5, 9.0, 7.5, 8.5, 8.0, 9.5, 10.0, 8.0, 7.0, 8.5
1. Find the upper quartile.

2. What is the D5 of the judges’ score?
