CRITERIA FOR MASS CONCRETE PLACEMENTS AND THERMAL CONTROL PLAN

As the interior increases in temperature and expands , the surface concrete maybe cooling and contracting. This causes tensile
stresses that may result in thermal cracks at the surface if the temperature differential between the surface and center is too
great. The width and depth of cracks depends upon the temperature differential , physical properties of the concrete and the
reinforcing steel.

Internal concrete temperature gain can be controlled by a number of ways :

1. A low cement content (120 kg to 270 kg per cubic meter)

2. Large aggregate size (75 mm to 150 mm well (uniformly) graded)
3. High coarse aggregate content (up to 80% of total aggregate)
4. Low-heat-of hydration cement
5. Low-heat pozzolans – where heat-of-hydration of a pozzolan is 40% to 90% that of cement
6. Reductions in the initial concrete temperature by cooling the concrete ingredients
7. Steel forms for rapid heat dissipation
8. Water curing and
9. Low lifts – 1.5 m or less during placement

Typically , several of the methods are used in combination.
