MUSIC OF VISAYAS
The Visayas Region is one of the most beautiful regions to visit in the
Philippines. Exciting events like the Ati- Atihan festival and the Sinulog festival are
well - attended by tourists and members of the community. Scenic places like
Boracay, Chocolate Hills of Bohol, and the Magellan's Cross in Cebu are often
visited by tourists and Filipinos alike.
The Visayas region is situated between the islands of Luzon and Mindanao.
well known provinces in this region include Iloilo, Cebu, Negros Occidental/Oriental,
Samar, Leyte and Bohol.
It is the home to some of the Philippines' best singers like Pilita Corales,
Dulce and Sheryn Regis. Most Visayan songs or music are written in duple or triple
meter with a simple melody that is easy to sing.
Folk songs like Si Pilemon, Pakitong-kitong, Ili-ili Tulog Anay, Rosas Padan
and Matud Nila originated from this region. The long list of Visayan folk songs
includes lullabies, working songs, harana and children's songs.
Here are example of Visayan folk songs:
*Children's song- Ilo nga Bata
*Drinking song- Condansoy
*Working song - Si Pilemon
*Epic song - Kandu
*Serenade song - Matud Nila
*Debate song - Balitaw
*Nonsense song- Pakitong-kitong

Traditional Visayan folk music were known to many such

as Dandansoy originally in Hiligaynon and is now commonly sang in other Bisayan
languages. Another, although originally written in Tagalog, is Waray-Waray, which
speaks of the common stereotypes and positive characteristics of the Waray people.

3
American jazz singer Eartha Kitt also had a rendition of the song in her live
performances. A very popular Filipino Christmas carol Ang Pasko ay
Sumapit translated by Levi Celerio to Tagalog was originally a Cebuano song
entitled Kasadya Ning Taknaa popularized by Ruben Tagalog.
Balitaw is the song traditionally associated with the Visayas region in the
same way the kundiman and kumintang are associated with ancient Tagalog music.
The music of the balitaw is usually written in 3/4 time. It is also danced to,
although it originally was something that was merely sung. This folk song has a more
developed form called balitao romansada. The traditional instrument used to
accompany the balitaw was a three-string coconut-shell guitar; later, a harp was
adopted as the instrument of choice because more chords could be played on it.
When performed today in modern rendition, a five-string guitar is used.
The balitaw is a debate or dialogue song in which a young woman and a
young man compete to see who is better at improvising romantic verses. These
verses are sometimes memorized in advance. Using song to disguise the intimate
sentiments of courtship reduces the embarrassment involved in meeting potential
mates.
These witty exchanges of balitaw used to be a prelude to courtship and
marriage, but this tradition had faded away by the 1930’s and is no longer observed
in contemporary Visayan society, although the songs are still performed for the sake
of performance. Pedro Alfafara was the famous singer who popularized the balitaw
as a performance song before the outbreak of World War II.

Balud sa Kalimot ( BALITAW)

Sa paglantong sa dagat
nakita kadtong baybayon
diin atong gisubli-subli

daw gabon nangawala
pagtaub ay napanas
miuban lang sa hinaganas
sa mapintas nga balud sa kalimot
gibanlas ang gugma mo.

BALAK
is a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that usually
metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as rhyme, and stanzaic
structure.
- It can also be described as a poetry in Bisaya version.

Kon Wa Nay Gugma (Balak)

Kon wa nay gugma nga mahikaplagan ko
nganha sa pagsubang sa adlaw sa kabuntagon,
dili angay gayud nga ako, ikaw mao ang basolon
kay anaa man gud ang kasaypanan kanako.

Ako ang kapakyasan sa mga matam-is **** damgo

5
Apan ang kagahapon pagahatagan sa pag-amping nako
aron di mawagtang bidlisiw sa paghinigugmaay nato,
wala mo man namatyagan mga pag-antos ko karon
ikaw gihapon, biskan wa nay gugma nga mahikaplagan ko.

shepherd who visited the baby Jesus in the manger.
The presentation is through the singing of the worship song “DAYGON KA” in
a happy mood.
DAYGON KA
Karon ang adlaw sa Dios
Karon ang adlaw sa pagdayeg ug pagsimba
Ibayaw ang atong kamot

Mulukso, musayaw, musinggit ug maghugyaw

Balaan, dalaygon nga Dios

Karon ang adlaw sa Dios

Karon ang adlaw sa pagdayeg ug pagsimba
Ibayaw ang atong kamot

Mulukso, musayaw, musinggit ug maghugyaw

Balaan, gamhanan ang Dios

Daygon ko Ikaw
O Dios na labing gamhanan
Magtuboy Ka sa among pagsimba

O Dios na wa'y kausaban

Hangtod sa kahangturan
Daygon ko Ikaw sa wa'y katapusan
