Exercise 1:: Question 1: What Is The Main Topic of The Divided Paragraph?
ID: 20650048
Subject: WRITING 5
Exercise 1:
Paragraph 2: From “But a new use for charcoal” to “vital nutrients such as nitrates”.
Paragraph 4: From “But other agricultural scientists” to “in this area is urgently needed”.
Paragraph 1: At approximately the same time the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere
began to rise.
Paragraph 2: It is claimed that using biochar made from various types of plants can both
improve soil quality and combat global warming.
Paragraph 3: The other benefit of biochar is its ability to lock CO2 into the soil.
Paragraph 4: But other agricultural scientists are concerned about the environmental
effects of growing crops especially for burning, and about the displacement of food crops
that might be caused.
Paragraph 2: Illustrate the benefits of biochar in improving soil quality and preventing
global warming.
Paragraph 3: Show another advantage of biochar that is the ability to lock CO2 into the
soil.
Paragraph 4: Summary of the benefits of biochar as well as the burning concerns.
Question 3: What are the supporting ideas for each divided paragraph?
Paragraph 1:
Paragraph 2:
- Various experiments in the United States have shown that adding burnt crop
wastes to soil increases fertility and cuts the loss of vital nutrients such as nitrates.
Paragraph 3:
- The process of decay normally allows the carbon dioxide in plants to return to the
atmosphere rapidly, but when transformed into charcoal this may be delayed for
hundreds of years.
- In addition, soil containing biochar appears to release less methane, a gas which
contributes significantly to global warming.
- American researchers claim that widespread use of biochar could reduce global
CO2 emissions by over 10%.
Paragraph 4:
- However, the potential twin benefits of greater farm yields and reduced
greenhouse gases mean that further research in this area is urgently needed.
Exercise 2:
Question 1: Plagiarism
Because it is used lots of the same structures and phrases from the original passage such
as:
Question 2: Paraphrase
Because it is written in a simpler and shorter version, with alternative terms, without losing
the meaning of the original text.
Question 3: Quotation
Because it uses two sentences from the original text. They are put in quotation marks.
Question 4: Plagiarism
Because it is used some words that seem different from the original passage, but the idea
remains the same.
Question 5: Paraphrase
Because it has been paraphrased from the original passage using different words and
structures. However, it seems that the writer did not understand the original text well, so
the paraphrase is not very good.
