Brief Irvine History Payton Lewis
Native Americans
The land surrounding what is now known as “Estill Springs” was predominantly occupied by
those within the Shawnee. Multiple trading camps and wigwams inhabited this region,
primarily serving as a means of profit and storage for the tribe. Additionally, it is believed that
Estill Springs was once the site of a great Native American battle, supported by the vast
amount of flint arrowheads and stone tomahawks found during archaeological expeditions.
Early Settlers
It is believed that Dr. Thomas Walker and his party of explorers were the first white men to have
set foot on the soil of what is known as Estill County. At that point in time, the Loyal Land
Company had been given a grant of 800,000 acres in the western wilderness and Dr. Walker was
sent to explore this land. On March 6th 1750, he left his home in Albemarle County, Virginia
with his companions, Ambrose Powell, William Tomlinson, Colby Chew, Henry Lawless, and John
Hughes.
Ravenna-Irvine Railway
The Kentucky Union and the Richmond, Nicholasville, Irvine, and Beattyville Railroads (RNI&B)
built and operated railway companies up the Kentucky River Valley to the edge of the mountains
in Eastern Kentucky. The 104 miles of the RNI&B extended from Versailles, through
Nicholasville, Richmond, and Irvine, then along the Kentucky River before terminating at
Beattyville. Initially, these companies struggled financially and were unable to generate sufficient
funding to cover interest on bonds, pay stockholders, or extend their lines further into the rich
coalfields of Eastern Kentucky. It wasn’t until the purchase by the Louisville and Nashville
Railroad during 1909 and 1910 that these lines became financially stable.
