PLANNED PREVENTATIVE PS8307

MAINTENANCE LV MOTOR STARTER Revision: 1

CUBICLE
The purpose of this Planned Preventative Maintenance Routine is to prove that the equipment
covered by this routine meets the specified performance criteria set out in Published Manuals
and to ensure that compliance to Safety is met.

PPM Action

Periodic test and inspection of the operating performance of the Motor starter cubicle and associated
Panel mounted equipment.

Periodic primary / secondary injection testing of motor feeder protection relays. Selected utilised
protection functions to be injected / tested with the results checked against required trip times in
accordance with published operation times and the Client approved settings / protection schedule.

Pre-Routine Checks

Check historical records and previous PPM routine reports for repairs performed since the last major
routine and note any outstanding repair work.

Refer to the appropriate approved circuit diagrams / documents and manuals while carrying out this
routine.

Check and ensure that tag identification is in place, secure, correct and legible.

Routine Checks

All work to be undertaken in accordance with the Client Specific Permit-To-Work System and close
communication with the control room, and any other parties deemed necessary by the client, must be
maintained. Before commencing with the maintenance on a Motor Starter cubicle the Client Authorised
Electrical Duty Holder must ensure that the cubicle main isolator is in the OFF position and, in the case
of a withdrawable starter, the chassis unit is ready for removal.

Motor Starter Unit

Unlock / open the cubicle door and if withdrawable type, withdraw the Starter chassis from the cubicle
compartment utilising correct kinetic lifting techniques. Ensure the chassis is safely positioned on a
suitable work surface.

In the case of a withdrawable Starter ensure that the Busbar panel shutters have operated correctly.
If applicable, ensure that the Busbar shutters can be individually padlocked by inserting the padlock
through the relevant padlocking point in the mechanism. This action may form part of the isolation
procedure and should be actioned by the Client Electrical Duty Holder prior to hand over for
maintenance routine.

Inspect the cubicle and remove any dust and debris with a vacuum cleaner

Check the surface condition of the primary disconnects.

NB - Only inspect the panel fixed live side contacts as part of a full Switchboard Busbar isolation.

If the silver plating on the withdrawable electrical contact parts is worn to such an extent that the copper
conductor material below becomes visible, or if the surfaces are corroded, damaged or evidence of
overheating is visible, refer to S&I recommendations for guidance.
Check all fixings on the primary disconnects are secure i.e. the Beryllium contacts are correctly fastened,
and that all connections are secure. Refer to S&I Type 439 Switchgear / MCC O&M Manual section 8
Page 25 for correct torque settings.

Carefully clean the insulating materials surfaces removing any dust deposits using a soft, dry lint free
cloth – do not use solvents.

Apply new grease to the main contact pins in accordance with the manufacturers’ instruction.

Inspect the control plug and socket at the rear of the chassis and within the panel for damage, defects
and mechanical security.

Insert control cable umbilical between the chassis auxiliary plug and panel socket (only applicable for
withdrawable starters). Inform the control room that the control and indication of the Starter cubicle is to
be proved remote from the switchboard.
Complete operational test of the motor starter cubicle by starting and stopping from all control points,
proving all remote operations, ESD and indications.

Utilising Calibrated 1kV Insulation Resistance Tester (Megger BM11 or equivalent) perform:

• IR check on mains circuit, phase to phase and phase to earth.

• Minimum value 100 Meg-Ohms.

Utilising Calibrated current injection test set c/w timer (Sverker 760 or equivalent) perform:

• Motor Thermal Overload test.

• Motor Earth Fault test.
• Consult MPR manual and protection schedule to ascertain expected results.

By secondary injection (Programma Freja 300 or equivalent) prove the operation of other Protection
Relays fitted within the panel. Consult the appropriate relay setting schedule and manufacturer’s
information for test procedure required.

Optional - Utilising Calibrated Low Ohm Test (Megger DLRO10, or equivalent) perform:

• Main circuit resistance test (Ducter equivalent).

• Maximum value 500µOhms.

Check anti condensation heaters and thermostats, if applicable, for correct operation and settings.
Using a Calibrated 500V Insulation resistance tester (Megger BM11 or equivalent), carry out an IR check
on each anti condensation heater.

Remove any padlocks (client nominated electrical duty holder) and reinstate the chassis into the panel
cubicle.
With the chassis inserted prove any inter-tripping functions if applicable.
