I. Concept Notes

To create a new blank document:


1. Click the Microsoft Office button.
2. Select New. The New Document dialog box appears.
3. Select Blank document under the Blank and recent section. It will be highlighted by default.
4. Click Create. A new blank document appears in the Word window.
Open an Open Document Text file in Word
1. Click the Microsoft Office Button. , and then click Open.
2. In the File of type list, click Open Document Text.
3. Click the file you want to open, and then click Open.
Save your document
1. Click FILE > Save, pick or browse to a folder, type a name for your document in the File name box,
and click Save. Save your work as you go - hit Ctrl+S often. To print, click the FILE tab, and then
click Print.
Closing the documents
1) Choose the Close command from the File tab menu.
2) Alternatively, you can use the handy Ctrl+W keyboard shortcut. If you haven't saved your document
recently, Word prompts you to save before you close. When the document has been saved, closing it
simply removes it from view — you're done!

Concepts Notes:

Documents often have to be edited or revised either for updating or correcting them. Before computers
invented, editing was done manually and revised manuscripts had to be written or typed all over again. Today,
documents can be revised to perfection before being printed or published. MS Word is one of the best software
ever developed to make editing easy and effective.
Insertion Point and Pointers
Insertion point- is the blinking marker on the page that show the point where you typing. Also known as
cursor, the insertion point moves to the right as you type.

The pointer is a mark on the screen that shows the position of the mouse. It moves all over the screen as you
move the mouse and is used to place the insertion point where you want to type. It could also appear in several
ways:

Typing features of Word:

 Word Wrap – this feature will not split up individual words that appear on the end of each line.
 Delete Characters- the Backspace key moves the insertion point to the left one space at a time,
eliminating text or space while the Delete key eliminates text or space to the right of the insertion
point and keeps the insertion point stationary.
 Arrow Keys- these are useful keys when you want to move the insertion point without using the
mouse.
 Typing and Inserting Texts- the text you will type will appear wherever the blinking cursor
(insertion point) is placed. You can move the cursor by moving the position of the mouse and
clicking.
 Font styles and Effects – style is a format enhancing tool that includes font typeface, font size,
effects (bold, italics, underline, etc.), colors and more.
