INTRODUCTION

Simulators have opened up a new opportunity to improve the quality of education, especially in areas
where, training under real circumstances has been the only alternative for education (Elsevier, 2019).
Before, the most effective and the alternative way of learning is training under the real circumstances,
but in these modern times there are already existing ship simulators that help in learning skills that can
only be acquired on board ship, it is the closest to the reality. A simulator is defined as, “A device,
designed to satisfy objectives which mimics part of real situation in order to allow an operator to
practice and/or demonstrate competence in an operation in a controlled environment” (Hensen, 1999, p.
ix). Moreover, maritime institutes use simulation technology for maritime training and nautical studies,
in order to imitate specific environments, for instance channels, fairway, port approach areas and
operations of entrance for certain types and size of ships (Hensen, 1999). It achieves the learners to
acquire more information and learn new skills faster through repeatability and security by learning the
basic operations. The environment in the simulator can be changed accordingly, the winds speed and
direction, waves, weather, visibility, depth, etc. (Rijken, 2008) has pointed out that the importance of
accurate modeling of hydrodynamic effects on ship maneuvering behavior; also, a realistic simulation
environment increases the realism of simulated maneuvers, it is required for the simulations that is
provided by the simulator include and appropriate level of physical and behavioral realism in
correspondence with recognized training and assessment objectives (DNV, 2011). The use of simulators
should still be required to have a mix learning, from learning the basics or theoretical before the actual
use of the simulator, instructors or si assessor must have knowledge and high qualification and
competency to carry out the task (Regulation-I/6-Training Assessment). Can be compared to driving
simulators where it is required for drivers to know the basics, operation of the vehicle, and rules of the
road before operating the simulator.

Established in 2016, MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA) it is a joint venture between
Magsaysay Group of Companies and Mitsui Osk lines. MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy is envisioned
to be the premier maritime higher educational institution in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region
producing globally competitive maritime professionals through progressive and unparalleled outcome-
based education founded on the virtues of excellence, discipline, and service. The MOL Magsaysay
Maritime Academy continuously invests in technologies and innovation that provides students with best
learning methods and practical experiences, with the five-storey Ship-In Campus that is equipped with
simulators 2-stroke main engine, generator, deck and engine workshop, mooring and windlass machine
and Olympic- size swimming pool that provides maximum simulated experiences. (The Editorial Team,
2018)
This study will be conducted to verify the effectiveness of the ship Bridge equipment simulator amongst
MMMA cadets. Specifically, this study aims: (a) To know if the students have increased their
performance or competency; (b) To identify the setbacks from the program; and (c ) To improve on the
areas or aspects of the program to have the most efficient and effective learning that is compatible for
most cadets. (The Editorial Team, 2018)

Research Questions

As this study aims to identify the level of effectiveness … it specifically answers the following questions:

1. What are the facilitating factors that affect the effectiveness of the simulator?

2. What are the hindering factors that affect the effectiveness of the simulator?

3. What is the level of effectiveness of the ship Bridge equipment simulator, in terms of:

- teaching how to maneuver ship in different weathers?

4. How effective is the ship bridge equipment simulator on practicing the rea life scenarios onboard?

5. Do ship bridge equipment simulators really help you to understand other things such as ocean current,
wind, fuel efficiency, cargo handling, and other things that affects maneuvering?
