FEED SYSTEM

The feed system contains the following components:

1. Feed control joystick in the operator’s cab. This control

is a pilot control valve. Pilot pressure is regulated depending
on the position of the control lever. The control lever also is
equipped with the push button used to activate fast feed.

2. Feed pressure control located on the side console in the

cab. This control is a pilot relief valve, which sets the maximum
feed force applied to the bit. This is accomplished by limiting
the working pressure of the feed valve.

3. Feed valve located in engine enclosure. This is a

proportional control valve with remote pressure control
capabilities.

4. Feed Control Mode valve. Acts as the brain of the feed

system limiting pressure and activating the synchronization
when required during pipe changing.

5. Feed motor counterbalance and brake valve. The valve

is located adjacent to the feed motor on the drill guide. The
manifold contains the counterbalance cartridges and a pressure
reducing cartridge valve for limiting the pressure applied to the
feed brake.

6. Feed motor and brake assembly. The motor is a radial

piston unit with integral brake unit. The feed motor directly
drives the feed chain; no intermediate gearing is used. The
displacement of the feed motor is 64.3 in.3 (1054 cc).

Operation of the feed circuit:

When the Drill/Tram selector switch is placed in the drill position, pilot
pressure at 400 PSI (27 Bar) is directed by the drill tram selector
valve to the joystick controls found on the operators seat arms. The
feed joystick found on the left seat arm and is a proportional pilot
control valve. Moving the joystick only partially will allow for

Chapter 6 Page1 Feed Circuits

feathering of the feed system. Moving the joystick lever forward

activates down or forward feed, moving the lever back activates
retract or reverse feed. Pilot pressure developed by moving the
joystick is directed to the mode valve. Within the mode valve, several
valves can affect the operation of the feed circuit. The operation of
the mode valve will be discussed on the following pages.

Drilling

When drilling the feed control joystick is placed in the forward

detented position. This will direct pilot fluid at 400 PSI (27 Bar) to the
“F” or forward pilot port on the mode valve. Within the mode valve
there is found a pair of pressure reducing (PR) valves (#2 on the
down feed circuit and #1 on the up feed circuit on the schematic).
Each valve has a spring chamber drain port that is connected to tank
through a two-position normally closed solenoid valve (#3 on the
schematic). This valve remains closed when drilling (it is only
energized to open in the rod changing mode). When the valve (#3) is
closed, the drain ports of the two pressure reducing (PR) valves are
blocked. Blocking these lines causes the PR valves not to function
as pressure reducing devices. Full pilot pressure is then directed to
shift the feed valve spool to its wide open position. Since the feed
spool is fully open at this time, the feed valve compensator is
responsible for regulating the flow to the main spool. Flow is held to
whatever flow is required to maintain the feed pressure set by the
feed pressure control in the cab. When the feed control lever is
shifted to the reverse feed position, pilot pressure is directed to shift
the spool in the feed valve to the reverse position. This action closes
the pressure switch (#10) which in turn energizes the solenoid on the
valve #7. When this valve is energized, the remote pressure port of
the main feed valve is connected to valve #6. The normal setting of
this valve is 1800 PSI (124 Bar). This allows the reverse feed to work
at pressures up to the limit set in the previous sentence. The rotary
head and pipe can be raised from the bottom of the hole without
depressing the fast feed button. Using the fast feed button at this
time is not normally required. If it is depressed, the solenoid on valve
#8 is energized. When #8 is energized, it shifts and closes the fluid
path to the downstream relief valves. The maximum pressure that

Chapter 6 Page2 Feed Circuits

Service Training Manual CM760/CM780

can be applied to the feed motor is now maximum pump pressure

(3600 PSI or 248 Bar). It is important to remember that the pressure
that will be displayed on the feed gauge at this time will only be the
actual pressure required to lift the head and drill string from the hole.

FEED SYSTEM WHILE CHANGING PIPE

When adding or removing pipe the rod changing (ARC) must be

energized. There is a 3-position switch located directly below that
does this. This switch is also used to activate the dust collector fan
circuit. When in the ARC mode, the solenoid on valve #3 is
energized. The opens the drain port from valves #1 and #2. With the
drain port open, the PR valve will limit pilot pressure to the main feed
valve thereby limiting the travel of the spool. This allows for
adjustment of the feed speed to synchronize with the rotation speed
of the rotary head. It is important that the feed speed during pipe
changing is synchronized to prevent premature damage to the
threads on the pipe. When using the reverse feed at this time, the
reverse feed pressure switch (#10) will be activated. This action
energizes valve #7 reducing the up feed pressure limit to 1800 PSI
(124 Bar). Limiting the pressure at this time minimizes the potential
thread damage during uncoupling by limiting the amount loading that
can be applied to the pipe threads if the operation of the
synchronization is somewhat off. Remember that in the ARC mode,
the feed speed either down or up is limited the two PR valves. Using
the fast feed button during the pipe changing function will greatly
speed up the operation. When the fast feed button is being used, the
head will stop just short of clearing the top or the pipe in the carousel.
This means that pipe cannot be removed or racked until the head is
raised higher. It is necessary the release the fast feed button so the
rotary head will travel higher to allow removing or racking pipe.

FURTHER EXPLANATION OF THE MODE VALVE FUNCTIONS

A proximity switch at the top of the drill guide controls the feed stop
circuit. The switch is normally open and closes when the rotary head
mounting slide passes near it. The feed stop circuit is only active
when the fast feed button is depressed. When the proximity switch is
made (sees the mounting slide) the feed stop solenoid valve is de-
energized and the feed stop solenoid is energized. The feed stop

solenoid valve then blocks the pilot pressure at the mode valve and
vents the end cap of the valve. The spring centered feed valve then
shifts to the neutral position and the feed stops. Releasing the fast
feed button allows the head to move up the guide past the proximity
switch.

Diagram of the Mode Valve

ADJUSTMENT OF THE MODE VALVE

As stated previously, the drilling feed pressure is controlled in the

operator’s cab. Feed pressure will vary depending on the size of the
bit, type of hammer and rock hardness, but will normally range
between 400 PSI (27 Bar) and 700 PSI (48 Bar). There are three
adjustment required to set up the feed functions of the mode valve.

1. Reduced feed pressure retract valve:

This is a cartridge valve located on the front of the manifold (see

diagram above).

Chapter 6 Page4 Feed Circuits

Service Training Manual CM760/CM780

Using the feed control in the cab, retract the rotary head until it is
stalled. Observe the feed pressure gauge in the cab. It should
indicate 1800 PSI (124 Bar). If the pressure is low, turn in the
adjustment screw on the cartridge. If high, back the screw out.

2. Threading and unthreading synchronization:

Place the Rod changer/Dust Collector control in the cab in the rod
changing position. Synchronization is accomplished by setting the
feed speed to match the rotation speed. Whenever the unit is in the
rod changing mode, rotation speed is always at its maximum
regardless of where it is set for drilling. Locate the two identical
cartridges on the front of the mode valve manifold. The cartridge on
the right is the down speed adjustment. The one on the left is for
retract or up feed. The actual adjustment is done visually. It will be
necessary to drill the first pipe down and lock it with the breakout fork.
Loosen the rotary head from the pipe. Have the operator disconnect
and reconnect the pipe to head connection adjusting the appropriate
feed speed adjustment screw. Achieving the correct feed speed may
take several attempts with the adjustment screws. Once it appears
that the adjustments are correct, test the threading several more
times just to be sure.

There is another adjustable cartridge on the inside end of the

manifold. This part of the rotation circuit and will be discussed later in
this manual

ADJUSTMENTS-FEED COUNTERBALANCE & BRAKE VALVE

The operator has full control of the feed pressure while drilling. The
feed pressure adjustment is located on the tram console to the right
of the drill/rotation control joystick. The other components that may
require adjustment are the feed counterbalance valves and brake
valve. To adjust the counterbalance valves:

1. Use the feed lever and lower the drifter to the bit is on the
ground or the drifter to the bottom of the drill guide. This is very
important so the drifter cannot fall during the adjustment
procedure.

SERIOUS INJURY CAN RESULT IF THE DRIFTER FALLS

UNCONTROLLED.

2. Disconnect the feed motor working lines from the motor and join
these two hoses together with a tee fitting. Connect a 1000 PSI (150
Bar) gauge to the open port of the tee. Cap the motor ports to
prevent dirt from entering the motor.

3. Start the engine and place the feed valve in the forward position.
Observe the test gauge. If the counterbalance valve is properly
adjusted, the gauge should indicate 300 PSI (20 Bar). If not, locate
the counterbalance valve cartridge opposite the FF (forward feed)
port. Remove the dust cap. To lower the pressure, turn the
adjustment screw in (clockwise). To increase the pressure, turn the
adjustment screw out (counter clockwise). Be sure the retighten the
locknut.
4. To adjust the reverse feed counterbalance valve, have an
assistant hold the feed lever in the reverse position and repeat the
previous paragraph in reverse. If no help is available, the two
counterbalance cartridges can be exchanged and use the same
procedure as described in paragraph 3. Reconnect the lines

To adjust the brake valve, lower the drifter so either the bit is on
the ground or the drifter is at the bottom of the drill guide.

1. Remove the brake line from the feed motor brake unit. Install a
1000 PSI (150 Bar) gauge in the end of the hose. Cap the open

brake port. The brake valve test port may also be used for this
adjustment.

2. With the engine running and the drill / tram selector switch in the
drill position, place the feed lever in the down feed position. Check
the feed pressure gauge and adjust the feed pressure to 1000 PSI
(68 Bar) or higher. Observe the test gauge. It should indicate 300
PSI (20 Bar). If it does not, remove the dust cap from the feed brake
pressure-reducing valve. Turn the adjustment screw out (CCW) to
decrease the pressure or in (CW) to increase the pressure.
Retighten the locknut and replace the dust cap. If removed replace
the brake hose.

Caution: Do not set the brake valve any higher that the pressure
noted above. The brake housing is limited to a maximum pressure of
435 PSI (30 Bar). Exceeding this pressure well cause a failure of the
brake housing

To lower the pressure, turn the adjustment screw in (clockwise). To

increase the pressure, turn the adjustment screw out
(counterclockwise). Be sure the retighten the locknut.

4. To adjust the reverse feed counterbalance valve, have an assistant

hold the feed lever in the reverse position and repeat the previous
paragraph in reverse. If no help is available, the two counterbalance
cartridges can be exchanged and use the same procedure as
described in paragraph 3. Reconnect the lines.

To adjust the brake valve, lower the drifter so either the bit is on
the ground or the drifter is at the bottom of the drill guide.

1. Remove the brake line from the feed motor brake unit. Install a
1000 PSI (150 Bar) gauge in the end of the hose. Cap the open brake
port. There is also a test port on the counterbalance valve/brake
valve manifold. This can be used to perform this adjustment.

2. With the engine running and the drill / tram selector switch in the
drill position, place the feed lever in the down feed position. Check
the feed pressure gauge and adjust the feed pressure to 1000 PSI
(68 Bar) or higher. Observe the test gauge. It should indicate 300 PSI
(20 Bar). If it does not, remove the dust cap from the feed brake
pressure-reducing valve. Turn the adjustment screw out (CCW) to
decrease the pressure or in (CW) to increase the pressure. Retighten
the locknut and replace the dust cap. Replace the brake hose.

2. Adjustments to the feed mode valve.

The drawing on page 8 of this section shows the feed synchronize

cartridges. These are adjusted when the unit is in the rod changing
mode to match feed speed to maximum rotation speed for smooth
coupling and uncoupling of the pipes. This is primarily a trial and
retrial adjustment.

Also shown on this picture, is the reduced feed pressure up valve.

This cartridge is adjusted when the unit is in the rod-changing mode.
To set, reverse the feed so the DHD is stalled against the centralizer.
Leave the feed lever in reverse and set the reduced feed pressure up
cartridge at 1800 PSI (125 Bar). This pressure can be modified if
required but should never be higher than the pressure shown here.
