Brief Introduction

We use different materials in our daily living. Some of these materials make our work
easier and faster. Some materials improve our health. Others can protect and make our
environment safe by eliminating harmful organisms around us. Join me in discovering the
world of matter around us.s

Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

Use the properties of materials whether they are useful or harmful.
(S5MT-Ia-b-1)

Objectives:
Classify materials found in the environment according to use in
personal body care products, cleaning agents, and medicines.
Classify materials found in the environment according to use in
farm chemicals and reagents food.
Identify useful and harmful materials at home, in school and in the community.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Direction: Put a check mark (√) in the right column if the materials will
decay and cross (X) if it will not.

Materials Will decay Will not decay

1. plastic
2. bread
3. aluminum foil
4. styrofoam
5. magazine

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Materials found in our environment can be classified according to use as
body care products, cleaning agents, medicines, farm chemicals and reagent food. Body
careproducts refers to a wide variety of products used for personal hygiene, cleansing and
for beautification. These include skin moisturizers, body lotion, facial cleanser, bath soap,
shampoo, toothpaste, dental floss, mouth wash, deodorants, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail
polishes.

Medicine products are used for treatment of illness, injury, prevention of disease,
pain reliever and improving and preserving health.

Cleaning agents are substances used to remove dirt, including dust, to remove
offensive odor and to avoid the spread of contaminants from one place to another. Some
cleaning agents can kill bacteria in handle doors, worktops, and metallic surfaces. Some
cleaning agents, called degreasers, help dissolve oils and fats. Other cleaning agents like
acid are highly poisonous and corrosive when not diluted correctly. Extra care should be
practice in handling this kind of cleaning agent to keep us safe and prevent injury.

Other materials found in our environment are farm chemicals. Farm chemicals are
used by farmers to keep weed and pests from destroying their crops and to add more nutrients
to the soil. Farmers used different types of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and
fungicides.

Reagents are other materials found in our environment. It is a compound, or a

mixture used to cause chemical reactions or test if a reaction occurs. Some tests measure the
presence of substance in food. If you want to check the presence of starch in the food, just
add drops of iodine to the food sample. If the food sample turns blue-black, then it indicates
the presenceof starch in the food. To check fat presence in the food, add drops of ethanol to
the food sample, white emulsion in the food sample indicates positive results. Presence of
simple sugar can also be detected using Benedict’s solution.

We used materials for different purposes. Materials around us are made of different
properties that can be used to make valuable products which are useful to our home,
school, and community. Some of these materials are useful for cooking our food, like pans,
casserole, kettle, and oven.

Some materials are useful in cleaning our home and surroundings like mop, broom,
lawn mower and vacuum cleaner. Other materials like blackboard, armchair, books, and
computer are some of the materials found in school that are very useful to pupils and
teachers.

Other materials are corrosive, it is highly acidic and can corrode storage containers
or damage human tissue if touched.

Some materials are ignitable. It is a substance that can explode, catch fire, or emit
toxic fumes or gases into the environment. Example fuel, some cleaning fluids, some
furniture polishes. These materials can bring harm to your health, environment and other
organisms when not disposed properly. Materials can be classified as harmful if they can
cause injury or are toxic, reactive, corrosive, ignitable /flammable. They cannot be
dumped straight into landfill; they pollute the environment easily and take too much time
to decompose.
