hinge is negligible. Determine the tension in the cable in lbs.

2. The gate is hinged at A and rest on a smooth floor at B. The gate is 2.4 m
wide into the paper. Determine the ff:

a.) Force exerted by the water on the gate in kN

b.) The Force P needed to open the gate, neglecting the weight of the gate in
kN
c.) The force P necessary to oprn it considering the weight of gate of kN

3. The figure below shows a vertical circular gate in a 3-m diameter tunnel with
water on one side and air on the other side .
a. Find the horizontal reaction at the hinge in kN.
b. Where will the hinge support be located (z) to hold the gate in position in
meters?

c. Find the depth of the center of pressure of the whole section from the liquid
surface in meters.

5. The 8 ft. diam. cylinder weighs 500 lb. And rests on the bottom of a tank
that is 3 ft. long. Water and oil are poured into the left and right portions of the
tank to depths of 2 ft. and 4 ft. respectively. All answers should be in lbs

submerged in a water at the depth shown. Determine the reaction at pin B. The
plates have a width of 4 meters into the paper.
