Procedure Checklist
Weighing a Newborn

S.No. Procedure steps
1. Explain procedure to mother and family.
2. Note infant’s previous weight from record of last weighing.
3. Ensure that room temperature is warm.
4. Clean the weighing pan with wet duster.
5. Calibrate scale by setting weight at zero and noting if balance beam registers
in the middle of the mark. Scale with digital display should read ‘zero’ before
us.
6. Place baby sheet on pan I which is to be placed. Note the weight.
7. Place naked infant in basket or on the platform of the weighing scale. Hold
hand lightly above infant during measurement.
8. Note weight in grams and kilograms or pounds an ounces.
9. Lift infant from pan and help mother to dress baby.
10. Check and compare with previous day’s weight.
11. Difference of more than 100 grams need to be clarified by checking infants
weight once again.
12. If difference is still same it should be informed to head nurse or physician
concerned.
13. Record weight in nurses notes or flow sheet.

1. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 denoting attempt made by the students
2. Each statement will be score by Yes/No and yes contain 1 point & no contain zero point
3. Students who get 85 % or above will get full satisfactory and below will have to make attempt till the candidate get 85% or
above
