Scholars in Spring Creek Towers Achievements Commended
Starry commended scholarship winners in Spring Creek Towers with a dinner and award ceremony.

The lower level of the Brooklyn
Sports Club’s (BSC) Aspen room
was bustling with chatter as
excited parents and their teenage
children prepared for a special
scholarship award ceremony on
August 11th. Balloons, purple
tablecloths, and banners adorned
the multipurpose room for an ele-
gant dinner hosted by Starry Inter-
net to commend the 2022 Spring
Creek towers Scholarship Award
recipients for their steadfast dedi-
cation to academic excellence.
Over the past several months,
Starry has been offering services to
SCT, participating not just as an
internet provider, but also as a
supporter of the community. With
the new endeavor of higher educa-
tion and a new school year slowly
approaching, Starry saluted the
teens in the neighborhood who’ve
earned SCT scholarships by pro-
viding a congratulatory Italian din-
ner—buffet style—along with
music, awards, and a special gift.
Chanokiey Wilson gasped when her daughter, Senaxia Shields, found
out she received a Microsoft Surface laptop as a surprise gift.

“There were high school gradu-
ates from Spring Creek Towers who
were awarded scholarships, and we
want to be a part of it. We provide
broadband internet service here to
Spring Creek Towers, and we really
just wanted to be a part of this
amazing opportunity honoring
these kids and doing an event for
them,” Meki Adefris said, the Na-
tional Director for Marketing and
Partnerships for Starry Connect.
The event began with Master of
Ceremonies, Jeremy Williams, who
is the Spring Creek After School
Program Director, as he welcomed
families, SCT staff, community
members, and the honorees.

tagne took turns addressing the
crowd by reaffirming what an
achievement their children have
made and stressed the significance
of the road to college that the teens
were about to embark on.
“I can breathe a little. I’m very
proud of her, she worked hard not
just academically, but she did a lot
of community service. She’s been
doing that since seventh grade, and
it paid off. I’m so grateful to Spring
Creek Towers,” Jeanette Reyes said
of her daughter Arianna Rivera
whom she looked upon with adora-
tion.
Rivera still in shock over her gift
from Starry also shared her appre-
ciation for her scholarship that will
help her attend an out of state
college.
“It’s an opportunity that not a lot
of people get. I know a lot of my
friends didn’t have the financial
ability to go away. So, it’s very nice
to be able to have that opportunity.
And I’m grateful that I was given it
and it’s just how we feel. Oh, I was
shocked. I wasn’t expecting that,”
Rivera added.

welling her eyes as she beamed
with pure pride.
“I’m really proud and grateful.
God is good because she needed a
new computer, and I’m just so ex-
cited, happy, and grateful,” Wilson
Jeanette Reyes beamed with pride as her daughter, Arianna Rivera
was one of 12 students honored.

In addition to receiving their
scholarship the recipients received
a certificate commending their
accolades and were given a golden
bag with a surprise inside—a gift by
Starry’s partnership with Microsoft
to help the students while they
attend college.
Slowly, each teen unraveled their
gift boxes, which was closely fol-
lowed by the sound of audible gasps
from attendees. All were completely
flabbergasted and astonished to
find a Microsoft Surface Go 2-in-1
with a detachable keyboard—some
parents even began to cry and cheer
as a weight was lifted from their
shoulders. Purchasing a quality
computer for school can be ex-
pensive, and families stated that
this gift was a tremendous help.
“Our partner, Microsoft, has
given us devices to give to them so
they can go to college because ob-
viously you can have great internet,
but if you don’t have the device for
the success and to get on the in-
ternet then that’s half the problem,”
Adefris said, “At our core, we believe
that the internet should be a right
and it’s incredibly important for you
to have access to economic growth.
We are hoping that they stay
connected and be successful.”

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS FOR OLDER ADULTS
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL FALLS PREVENTION MONTH
Falls Prevention Awareness Day is on September 22nd which is the
start of the fall season; it’s a very serious matter and we all need to
pay significant attention to it. Falls are one of the leading causes of
emergency room injuries. Among older adults, falls are the leading
causes of deaths, unintentional injuries, and hospital admissions for
trauma. Falls can take a serious toll on the quality of life and
independence of an individual. Falls can cause bruising, hip
fractures, head injuries, and these accidents have the potential to be
fatal, especially for the elderly, which means that they deserve extra
attention to make sure they are protected. As people get older, many
of their faculties begin to weaken - Eyesight becomes poorer and
muscles begin to deteriorate as does coordination.
Take the Right Steps to Prevent Falls
•Stay physically active.
•Have your eyes and hearing tested regularly.
•Find out about the side effects of any medicine you take.
•Get enough sleep.
•Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
•Stand up slowly.
•Use an assistive device if you need help feeling steady when you
walk.
•Have adequate lighting in your apartment.
•Remove any obstacles on the floor as well as extension cord and
loose carpets.
As always, pay attention to your mental health – ongoing sadness,
loss of interest, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, changes in sleep
pattern, loss of appetite, excessive crying, irritability and so on. If you

On August 11th, Spring Creek Teen Central’s Summer Youth Em-

ployment Program (SYEP) workers celebrated their last day on the job
with a trip to Dave and Busters at the Gateway Mall with members of
the Young Adults Program. These TC alumni were able to connect
with SYEP workers, shedding wisdom on the transition to adulthood,
high school experiences, including the importance of researching
colleges and focusing on their future careers.

“The Princess” (NR) — Decades after her passing, Diana, Princess of

“Look Both Ways” (TV-14) — The night of college graduation can leave
fresh graduates feeling nervous about their future. It can be even more
nerve-wracking for a young woman like Natalie (Lili Reinhart), who — in the
midst of celebrating — takes a pregnancy test after getting an inkling that
she might have a baby on the way. If the test is positive, Natalie would stay
in her hometown and raise her child, but if negative, she would pursue
acting in Los Angeles like she’s always dreamed. In life, only one scenario
can truly await her, but with a bit of creative storytelling and movie magic,
viewers get to see both realities unfold for her simultaneously throughout
the film. Premieres Aug. 17. (Netflix)
“On the Count of Three” (R) — In his directorial debut, stand-up
comedian Jerrod Carmichael aimed quite high with this gritty comedy film,
starring himself and Christopher Abbott as two friends, Val and Kevin, who
make a suicide pact. Val and Kevin agree that it’ll be the easiest answer to
their difficult life problems and wish to spend their last day together to do
whatever they want. However, the two assume they can do this without any
consequences and end up wreaking havoc in the last 24 hours leading up
to their final moments. Full of dark humor and raw human emotion, “On
the Count of Three” is one of those movies that will make you laugh and
make you cry, probably at the same time. Releases on Aug. 17. (Hulu)
Wales, still serves as an icon in media all around the world, with series like
“The Crown” and films like “Spencer” giving their own interpretations of the
well-beloved, tragedy-stricken princess. Now, in this newly released
documentary, an emphasis is placed on how the media swarmed around
Diana, thus spawning a (still-prevalent) unhealthy obsession with the royal
family. This documentary uses many years of public footage of Diana
leading up to her funeral and, like many of the pieces focusing on her story,
goes to show how the institution meant to protect her instead miserably
failed her. (HBO Max)
“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” (TV-14) — Another Marvel series premieres
on Disney+ on Aug. 17! Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) was content
with her life and work as a lawyer, until she got contaminated with her
cousin Bruce Banner’s blood. Now having the ability to transform into She-
Hulk, Jennifer has to learn the way of the Hulk. Bruce quickly teaches
Jennifer how to master control over her new powers, and with such a
strong calling to her work, she just wants to suppress the person inside her
and go back to her normal life. But with a 6-foot-tall green version of

Summer in Spring Creek Towers

N
ew York City’s blistering back-to-back heat waves
and perpetual 87 degrees and above tempera-
tures did not sway Spring Creek Towers’ (SCT)
residents to remain indoors this summertime!
Locals are often seen enjoying morning walks along the
numerous winding paths to bask in the greenery and
early afternoons sitting in a shaded area where they
played games of chess and dominos on tabletops. Some
waited until the evening to play basketball in hopes of
cooler temperatures, others grabbed their paddles and
stepped into the handball courts. Children grabbed their
water guns and hopped into SCT’s playground sprink-
lers, while members of the Young Adults Program held
water balloon competitions.
Additionally, members of Spring Creek Teen Central
(TC) beat the heat by spending their evenings in the
Brooklyn Sports Club’s (BSC) pool.
Summertime in SCT offers a plethora of opportunities
to stay cool and have fun all within the community.

The Dominican Day Parade Returned to NYC

On August 13th, the 40th National Dominican Day Parade kicked off
on 36th Street and 6th Avenue after a two-year hiatus due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. Midtown Manhattan reverberated with Latin
music and the cheers of thousands as they waved their Dominican
flags, applauding the numerous parade floats at they traveled up
Broadway and ended on 51st Street and 7th Avenue.
During the event, elected officials hosted an official ribbon cutting,

christening the National Dominican Day Parade’s return. Governor,
Kathy Hochul, New York State Senator, Chuck Schumer, and this year’s
parade Grand Marshal, New York City Department of Transportation
Commissioner, Ydanis Rodriguez held giant scissors commemorating
the occasion.

On August 23rd, the Saints Row
reboot hit store shelves much to the
anticipation of avid gamers who’ve
been playing the series since it was
first released in 2006. This action-
adventure, open world game follows
a street gang as they complete
missions, commit a multitude of
crimes very much like the Grand
Theft Auto series; however, the
reboot has new characters, revita-
lized environments, and was boast-
ed to have a wider range of cus-
tomizations. With all of the hype,
this iteration has been somewhat of
a letdown for fans and reviewers are
not mincing their words when they
say it lacks substance.

Teen Central’s Trip to United Skates of America

Spring Creek Teen Central (TC) members boogied across the United
Skates of America’s roller-skating rink in Long Island on July 28th!
Engulfed by the 1970s disco club ambiance, about 30 teens from middle
school to high school were able to groove across a neon-lit skating rink
with members of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), forming
new friendships and fun experiences together. This event allowed those
who have never donned roller skates before to learn the retro sport in an
inclusive atmosphere. Some SYEP workers served as guides, holding
member’s hands and linking arms as they skated. Others had the natural
ability to majestically sashay around their counterparts, even performing
spins as they danced. This was all coupled with the extra treat of unlimited
pizza and lemonade for attendees!
“TC had so much fun! Skating brings the kid out of all of us,” Jahvonte
Williams said, TC Recreational Specialist, “We should never forget to have
fun!”
Upon returning to the Teen Central lounge in the Brooklyn Sports Club
(BSC), TC staff hosted a surprise birthday party for teen member Genesis.

TC Bids SYEP Workers Farewell

Spring Creek Teen Central (TC) bid farewell to their

Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) workers on
August 11th with a pizza party filled with snacks, ice
cream and a friendly Disney trivia competition.
The festivities were bittersweet since many of the teens
were sad to see their young new friends go, sharing that
this summer was an experience they would not forget.
The group truly bonded together over video games, dance
routines, swimming, and billiards.
As one last goodbye, TC staff held a trivia competition
between SYEP workers and teen members. Each player
had to quickly snatch a whistle that was placed between
them and their competitor—whoever won had the ability
to pick a question and choose to answer or pass it on.
Questions included the names of Hades’ minions in
Hercules, the name of Rapunzel’s Pet, and other fun
classic Disney trivia.
The event culminated with several teens writing
goodbye messages on a poster board so that they could
remember the experience.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Several months
ago, I started adding 25 grams of
whey protein to an afternoon smo-
othie each day. I was worried about
muscle loss after reading an article.
I have seen the sagging muscles and
skin in my arms and thighs. I am a
71-year-old woman, who plays
tennis twice a week and goes to the
gym about once a week.
I have friends my age who have
started adding collagen powders to
their smoothies to improve their
skin and prevent further facial
wrinkles. After researching collagen
supplements, I learned that they
contain collagen peptides and pro-
tein. The dosage and ingredients
vary by vendor. What is the correct

Because shoes lose shock absorp-
tion over time, wearing worn-out
shoes can elevate the risk for heel
pain, Achilles tendonitis and even
ankle sprains and stress fractures.
“Inspect old shoes and replace
any that lack sufficient cushioning
and arch support, or have excessive
wear to the bottom or around the
edges of the sole,” says Dr. Coyer.
“When shopping, don’t assume a
new pair will offer proper support.

toe box, maximum arch support
and shock absorption. The best
shoes for flat feet are stiff-soled,
lace-up shoes that have enough
depth for an orthotic insert, if
necessary.

An Overview of NTM, a Progressive Lung Disease

(StatePoint) Did you know that
everyone inhales nontuberculous
mycobacteria (NTM) into their lungs
as part of daily life? NTM is a group
of over 200 types of bacteria. While
most of these types of bacteria do
not cause harm in humans, some
do. The most common type of NTM
lung disease is MAC or myco-
bacterium avium complex. Natural-
ly found in soil and water, for most
people the organisms do no harm.
However, in a small number of
vulnerable individuals, NTM can
infect airways and lung tissue,
leading to disease. As of 2012, more
than 86,000 people are likely living
with NTM lung disease nationwide.
NTM lung disease is a progressive
disease, so the sooner you speak to
your doctor and receive a correct
diagnosis, the sooner you can
discuss treatment options with
them.
To help individuals better under-
stand the signs and symptoms of
NTM lung disease and be empower-
ed to get the help they need, the
American Lung Association, sup-
ported by Insmed Incorporated
through a collaborative sponsor-
ship, is sharing these important
facts about the condition:
What are NTM lung disease’s
most common signs and symp-
toms? The symptoms of NTM lung
disease are similar to other lung
conditions. Common symptoms
include chronic cough that may
produce mucus, fatigue, weight
loss, fever and night sweats.
Who’s at greatest risk? Although
anyone can get NTM lung disease,
some groups of people are at much
higher risk, including those with
lungs damaged from diseases such
as bronchiectasis, COPD, cystic
fibrosis, silicosis or a previous tu-
berculosis infection. Other high-
risk groups include postmeno-
pausal women and people over 65,
as well individuals with a weakened
immune system due to an auto-
immune disorder, or from taking
immune suppressing medications.
How does NTM lung disease af-
fect one’s health? The less progres-
sive form of NTM lung disease,
nodular bronchiectasis, causes in-
flammation, damage and scarring
over time. As the disease pro-
gresses, the damaged airways lose
their ability to clear mucus nor-
mally, which invites recurring res-
piratory infections. The more pro-
gressive form, cavitary disease,
causes scarring, fibrosis and the
formation of cavities or pits in the
lung tissue, which can lead to
respiratory failure. Some NTM or-
ganisms can cause disease in other
parts of the body, including the
lymph nodes, skin, soft tissue and
bones.
When is it time to see a doctor?
Consider asking your doctor about
NTM lung disease if you’re living
with a chronic lung disease and
your symptoms are getting worse or
not going away.
How is NTM lung disease diag-
nosed? Diagnosis typically involves
three different assessments: A
clinical exam, a chest X-ray or CT
scan, and a lab culture. It’s
important that diagnosis includes
identification of which species of
mycobacterium are causing the
infection, since that will determine
treatment options.
What are next steps after
diagnosis? Treatment options vary
depending on the type of NTM
species involved, but typically in-
clude two or more courses of
antibiotics for an extended period of
time, as well as making healthy life-
style changes. In some cases, sur-
gery is an option. While NTM lung
disease is treatable, it can be chal-
lenging to eliminate all of the bac-
teria so it doesn’t continue replicat-
ing. Advocates encourage seeking a
second opinion and following up
with a pulmonologist or infectious
disease specialist with specific ex-
perience treating NTM lung disease,
particularly if symptoms persist
after treatment.

rare, genetic lung disease called
Alpha-1 who was diagnosed with
NTM lung disease after discussing

I’m always on the lookout for
inexpensive ingredients that can be
used in lots of recipes. I’m es-
pecially happy when I find unex-
pected uses for a common ingre-
dient. I was wandering the frozen
foods aisle and did a double take on
a can of frozen lemonade. The
wheels began to turn.
I keep frozen juice concentrate in
the freezer at all times. Lemonade is
a particular favorite because it’s a
useful ingredient for many different
beverages and much more.
Some beverage ideas: Add straw-
berries, blueberries or raspberries
to make fruity lemonade. Add mint
or basil for a sophis-ticated twist.
Mix lemonade with different soft
drinks, like lemonlime soda or
ginger ale, for bubbly treats. Or mix
with iced tea to make an Arnold
Palmer.
Summer cocktails come to life
mixed with lemonade. Who doesn’t
enjoy a hard lemonade slushy by
the pool? Or a Lynchburg lemon-
ade mixed with whiskey? Lemon-
ade even makes a perfect base for a
margarita.
How about dessert? Since frozen
1 (12-ounce) container whipped
topping, thawed
1 (6-ounce) can frozen lemonade
concentrate, thawed
1 (9-inch) graham cracker crust
In a mixing bowl, blend the first
three ingredients. Pour the mix-ture
into the pie crust and freeze until
solid. Tart and creamy, cold and
dreamy.
But here’s where I got excited! I
thought, what is frozen lemonade?
It’s a concentrate of lemon juice,
citrus pulp, lemon oil and sugar.
You know what else uses those
ingredients? Marinades. Especial-ly
marinades for chicken and pork. I
can feel your skepticism. Stick with
me!
I went all “mad scientist” in the
kitchen and played around until I
came up with two marinade reci-
pes that all my taste testers loved. I
promise, they’re not sweet! Here are
the winners.
Both recipes make 1 cup of po-
tent marinade, enough for 3-4
pounds of your preferred chicken
pieces.
LEMON, ROSEMARY AND
GARLIC MARINADE
6 ounces frozen lemonade con-
centrate
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon garlic cloves,
crushed (or more!)
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh rosemary,
minced (or 1/2 teaspoon dried
rosemary)
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
In a gallon-size resealable food
storage bag, combine lemonade
concentrate, Worcestershire, vine-
gar, garlic, rosemary and onion
powder. Add chicken pieces, seal
the bag and smush to blend.
Marinate in refrigerator for 1 hour
or, even better, overnight. Optional
— before you add the chicken,
reserve 1/4 cup of marinade and
mix with 1 cup plain yogurt to make
a delicious sauce for the chicken.
LEMON, GINGER AND SOY
MARINADE
6 ounces frozen lemonade con-
centrate
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons fresh ginger, grated
1 tablespoon garlic cloves, crushed
1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly
ground
In a gallon-size resealable food
storage bag, combine lemonade
concentrate, soy sauce, ginger, gar-
lic and pepper. Add chicken pieces,
seal bag and smush to blend.
Marinate in refrigerator at least 1
hour or overnight.
To cook the chicken — Preheat
oven to 375 F. Bake for 50-55 min-
utes or until the internal tempera-
ture reaches 165 F. You can also
grill, broil or pan fry this chicken.
Please note lemonade concentrate
comes in two sizes: 6 and 12
ounces. These recipes call for 6
ounces, so you may get two recipes
from one can. When buying
concentrate, purchase brands that
don’t contain high fructose corn
syrup. They may cost a few cents
more, but it’s truly worth it.

Watermelon Mozzarella Salad

Serves: 4

Ingredients
3 c cold watermelon bite-sized balls or cubes
1 c bite-sized fresh part-skim mozzarella balls or cubes
(about an 8 oz package)
2 Tbsp honey
2 1/2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 Tbsp freshly chopped mint leaves
pinch salt
pinch red crushed pepper

Directions
1. Put watermelon cubes and mozzarella in a serving bowl.
