The Artist Kramskoy came from an impoverished petit-bourgeois family. From 1857 to 1863 he
(Background) studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts; he reacted against academic art and was an
initiator of the "revolt of fourteen" which ended with the expulsion from the Academy of a
group of its graduates, who organized the Artel of Artists.
Influenced by the ideas of the Russian revolutionary democrats, Kramskoy asserted the
high public duty of the artist, principles of realism, and the moral substance and nationality
of art. He became one of the main founders and ideologists of the Company of Itinerant
Art Exhibitions.
The Artwork A young woman in a beautiful dress appears before the viewer. She bent over the big
(Description) book, propping her high forehead with her hand – her gaze was concentrated, and her
pose relaxed. Surprisingly we are invisible to her view, which can tell a lot about a man,
but, nevertheless, we can guess the character of the heroine. Kramskoy wanted to show
on her delicate, sensual, soft – such as he loved her. However, the image is not devoid of a
sense of dignity and great inner strength.

Comparison and This scenario shows the status of a woman who is having a good life because of their
Contrast economic stability.

In the Photo Appropriation, almost the same image is shown but the meaning is different.
A stressed woman is portrayed because of the economic constraints a family should
consider. The presence of the electricity bill as one of the priorities a mother has to
consider before taking a rest is shown. This scenario is real at present which means that a
modern woman/mother takes care of the family physically and economically.
Message/Reflection Women show more productivity at present than in the past because if married, they are
expected to support the husband in all aspects. If she chooses to be single, she is expected
to help her parents in all aspects as well. This means that at present though the
Philippines is in a patriarchal society, women show productivity, relevance and
importance, especially in this time of health crisis wherein many women, mother
particularly, serve as frontlines leaving their family behind.
